Hello.
I have an intermittent and unresolved problem with my cruise control. It does various things. Sometimes it doesn't switch on but the light will appear later. Sometimes it won't set. Other times it will set but then deactivates seconds later. The scary thing that has happened three times now, is that I have set the speed but it doesn't activate, only to activate minutes later. I am sure this would have happened more but I am now aware and turn cruise off if it doesn't activate. Been to the dealership several times now and no resolution. It was initially suggested that it was user error but I am familiar with the system, having another BMW with the same cruise control. I am concerned now, as this has gone past being an inconvenience and is a safety issue.

On my bike this was caused by a sticky back brake. If it's stuck slightly on or just lighting up the brake light then the cruise control will not activate. It suddenly frees and all is okay.

Next time it plays up, hook your foot under the brake lever and make sure it is fully up and if it fixes it, sort out the brake problem.
