Hmmm.. it didn’t cut much ice in 2006 but I understand Netflix series ‘The Crown’ picked up on it. I’m not convinced this was realistic.

If we abolished them we’d each get £1.50 back, and we could house the poor in all those castles I suppose… Thinking

Edit: Actually that figure seems too low. Something must be missing, surely?

I looked the other night and I've never seen so much creative accounting, which is a good sign Neutral

Multiply it ten times and then still consider how much good Monday’s pomp alone, broadcast around the world, will have done for the UK in terms of reputation and tourism-related earnings, not to mention bonding most of the UK population. I know it’s mad but it works.

Yep, Barbados already has (last year), a number of Caribbean islands have said they want to do the same. I'm not sure how serious New Zealand etc.. are, sounds like that might be a longer term vision (eg: when they have enough support).

If so, why now, do you think? Do you think it will change much under King Charles? Do you think they do?
Some are just talking about no longer having the British monarch as their head of state. That's not the same thing as leaving the Commonwealth.
In Australia it seems to be the usual loud mouthed lefties shouting it up. I suspect they're in a minority.
Give it a generation though, and that might well change. After I've gone, I don't care, they can fuck themselves over all they want, pledge allegiance to the CCP or whatever other crap show they like...I don't have kids to worry about Smile

From what I've seen older folk in those countries are generally pro-remaining in the commonwealth, I'm entirely sure why, maybe they remember the British weren't quite the Galactic Empire.

I think younger folk have grown up in worse conditions and rightly or wrongly attribute that to the colonial era, when the older generation know the decline happened post-empire, and obviously kids don't listen to old folks.

Probably a bit of a things are shit, why not try a change attitude as well.

He'll either fail to maintain relationships or make them worse Smile

As I said before I think it was a continuity, status quo thing for many. Now she's gone it seems like a good time (for them).

Tradition might not make much quantifiable sense but it's at least something to fall back on when logic fails.

Tradition is a guide. The traditional has survived because it works, has been thoroughly tested. It's also a base on which communities are built. That's not to say things can't change, may even need to, but throwing everything out willy-nilly with nothing to replace the needs it fills is daft.

I thought we were doing pretty well with the former overall. The latter will create many more mistakes and disasters, that's for sure, with no guarantees that we'll go in the right direction - even unlikely that we will.
But impatient children will demand! Rolling Eyes

That's deterioration of the gene pool for no good reason which seems to be the way of the world these days. Laughing

When has revolution been mentioned in this thread or in any of the other threads at BCF on the royals over the last couple of weeks?

I think it's a good thing we never had the kind of bloody revolutions that unseated many other European monarchs but it is high time we got on with evolving past our pathetic reliance on pomp and started taking pride in something real.

How are we "relying on pomp"?
And what would you like to see us taking pride in?

And:

As I said on the ‘queen is dead’ thread, in Britain hating your country has become so mainstream there’s a market in it. The New York Times is trying to get a slice of that Guardian and Independent pie. The only national pride some people allow themselves is in knocking down institutions out of spite.

Needing some random figureheads who get wheeled out in order to feel proud or have a focal point for national identity is a dependence in my opinion. It seems that really is the only role they have, they provide an image for people who cant think of anything with more depth.

And your other question. Well pick anything you like, from our great nation, industrial, scientific, arts, social there's no doubt we have made an enormous contribution to world history. None of it dependant on the monarchy though and I would say these achievements were made despite the monarchy and we can achieve far more by leaving such an anachronistic organisation behind.

A capacity for self criticism is not the same as self hatred. Do you really want to live in a society that cannot reflect critically on itself? Thats not a country its a cult.

Yes but in this instance say, we abolish the monarchy and each get £1.50 back as explained earlier (or times ten), is that the entire benefit? What would be the point? Cutting off one’s nose to spite the face.

Food is a dependence. So are you going to give it up? How can a nation not be dependent on anything? You want to be dependent on government. I presume that comes from you having no confidence in your own abilities.
And you are just projecting a faulty assessment on other people anyway, through your lack of understanding.

It seems to you. The lack of depth comes from your lack of understanding.

I haven't heard such hypocrisy in all my life.

Quote:

So you think that without having had a monarchy, we would have been able to make all the contributions we have to the world? You don't know much about history, do you?

Well, you're entitled to your opinions. Give it another generation and you'll probably get what you want. But I'd be happy for us to hold a referendum on it right now.

Which particular joyful republic would you like us to emulate?
there are so many to choose from

The soon to be Peoples national socialist republic of scotchland?
Disunited states of Murica?
Russia?
China?
Ireland?
Mexico?

The problem with you moaning bleating fucktards is you're always so good at whining, complaining and pulling things down but never have anything truly better to replace it with.

If the UK is so bad why not do us all favour and fuck off to one of the above listed utopias
