 |
|
As per the title, I'm tempted on spending a few nights in the lakes in the coming weeks, weather dependant, but I'm having a hard time finding a decent campsite.
Ideally, I'd like a pub with it's own campsite, as I'll not be taking any cooking gear with me, so I'll need somewhere to eat, either on site, or close by. Other than that, showers and toilets are a nice to have, but not a necessity. ____________________ 2010 Kawasaki ER6-f - Given to the Mrs.

Conder farm in Dent is super basic but a short walk from several pubs and shops in Dent village. More Cumbrian Dales than lakes though.
Setmabanning camp site near Threlkeld is good value, about 1km walk from Threlkeld.
Waterside house Near Pooley Bridge is more upmarket, cafe on site, Half hour walk from Pooley Bridge. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Quite near me. Again, not really in the lakes, but close enough to be a decent jumping-off point. Just be aware that the food menu hasn't really changed since the 80's. And not in a nostalgic way. |
Come now.. they pass the Ham Egg and Chips test!

I used this one a lot, both for a base for fell walking trips and biking trips:
https://castleriggfarm.com
Small shop, shower facilities, caravan section is separated from camping area by a hedge, good views of Skiddaw and Blencathra.
About a 15 min walk into Keswick town centre (there's a path down through some woods and out along a residential road rather than walk along the main road). ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

While good (been going there every summer for the last 15 years), things have taken a turn for the worse lately with the expansion of the site during summer and the Sticklebarn pub (the other venue) converting to a daytime opening licensed cafe instead, so the pressure on the ODG is much higher. If you're on a bike, you can't park next to your tent either, unless you pitch right by the parking area.
An alternative is the National Trust Eskdale campsite which is very similar, but you can park next to your tent, it too has several decent pubs nearby, is quieter but still has excellent facilities, pastries in the morning etc.. It's a bit more faffy to get to, but if you're on a bike rather than in a car with a screaming 2 year old, that's hardly a problem.

I should add that as well as being very cheap, the Smetmabanning site is quite pretty. If you go, ask to go in the bottom field next to the road. It's the prettiest part, is quiet because it's away fromthe caravans and has a little side gate you can sneak out of for a quicker walk up to the pub. It might even be possible to have a wee fire, there is a fire circle down there.
