The constant whinging about interest rates and mortgage payments.

3% is still a historically very low interest rate. Before the 2008 crash (which everyone seems to harken back to with misty-eyed longing as being when things were "normal"), the interest rate was 5.5% and even that was comparatively low. It never dropped below 6% until the mid 90's and was in double digits for most of the 70's and 80's.

We've been living through a period of incredibly low interest rates but it appears people have been carrying out their financial planning based on this situation continuing indefinitely. 3% is not a normal central bank interest rate. 6-7% would be a more normal situation. Double digits aren't unheard of.

Do people not plan ahead before committing to a massive 25 year loan? (rhetorical question, clearly not). I looked at what the repayments would be if rates hit 15% (which they did in 1981 and 1989) before I took out a mortgage.

The thing we had from the late 60s was cheap N. Sea gas to generate lecky and heat homes. It was nothing to have the bedrooms and living Room like an oven. When you've to go down stairs with a bucket and shovel t' bring coal in there weren't as many rooms being heated. And the funny thing is no kittens died from cold.
Kids, mums and dads gadding about their house in shorts, underwater and goonies is no way to save a bob or two on energy.
