Recently been giving a 50,000 mile 2011 YBR some tlc and getting it MOT'd
which it passed no advisories
I usually only see the bike when he breaks something but this time he agreed to let me go over it in greater detail as it was in a pretty shabby state.
I mentioned that at that mileage it may be in need of an air filter if it hasnt
had one in the last few services and as they're cheap enough it wouldn't hurt to change it anyway so off he goes and buys one.
When I removed the covers this is what I found
I could see no evidence of rodents when I cleaned out the filter chamber so
with no foam or paper elements I can only assume someone 'improved' it
for moar powah?

Yep, I think it's safe to say that's someone's moar powah mod. Laughing

50000-mile YBR... Wow.

If that isn't a ringing endorsement of "go Japanese" then I don't know what is.

yep 50 thou but third engine though.
He's utterly clueless, had to show him where the spark plug was.
on every bike and scooter he's owned.

He bought it with a fooked engine and that's when I saw it first
2017 ish as I recall and I fitted a SH lump and off he went.

2019-2020 ish that engine went bad, I suspected cam bearings and neglect.
Again, a SH engine was found, fitted and happily this one seems to be holding up well.
My nagging about checking oil and doing regular changes seems to have stuck.

Nope, if you persist in riding them after the filter is fully choked and really work at it, wring that throttle, it'll suck the filter to bits and spit it through the engine.

Had a GPZ500 which did that. "Just been servicved" according to the seller. It also lodged lumps of filter foam deep in the power jets of the carbs which meant it revved to 5,00rpm, then nothing at all, then went directly to 9,00rpm. It was like riding a 250LC.
