I have a solid wall 30s style but post-war built 3 bed semi.
Since I bought it I've replaced of the remaining original Crittal windows with UPVC DG. I figured it would make a significant difference - it hasn't.
Last year I replaced the old Baxi back boiler with a wizzo condensing combi some new rads and new pipework. The place is still cold.
Due to the old Baxi open flue boiler I have a legacy double brick sized vent which blows like the mistral so I have gaffer taped up the inside but I'm cautious as I've retained the front gas fire of the old Baxi for 'spot heat'.
When I'm on my own only the front fire goes on and 2 from the 4 burners will get the small kitchen/dining room to 16/17 much quicker than the CH. I also get the impression that with the fire lit any down drafts from the open flue are curtailed.
I don't use many TRVs as they often fail IME and aren't used properly very often, so you might as well have regular valves to control the heat flow.
Not suer why I posted this - mostly dull blather. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750

18 and only to come on for an hour before getting up, an hour before getting in and an hour before going to bed. We have a ready supply of blankets for anyone who feels the cold between-times. I went to look at it was up to 25 (up to a maximum of 26.5 )
It kicks in at 16.5 or (for some reason) sometimes 7 - I don't know what thats all about, something to do with the pre-set times, I think.
Admittedly it *was* getting a bit warm in here ... although I don't have any curtains in my front room (just that glass frosting stuff).
And I am sitting here in a singlet vest and jeans, to be fair
But it was bloody cold when I got back (obvs).
Bloody Dubai was sweltering, and I only went from the plane to the bus to the nice air conditioned terminal. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Mine is at 19 currently, it's set to 18.5 during the day and 17 at night. When it's feeling colder we boost it to 20.5 for 30mins.
Recently got a powerful Valliant combi fitted, lovely for nice long, hot showers. The heating is on a Hive but not quite got round to Hive thermostats on the radiators yet, the cost of them and getting them fitted puts me off. The boiler is great though, very quick to warm up the house.
Only downside is if it gets really freezing outside, the plonka plumber fitted the boiler with an outlet pipe going into an outside drain. So as soon as it gets into the minus' it freezes up, gets blocked and the boiler stops working. ____________________ Previous: Aprilia Habana Retro 50cc (beauty), Yamaha SR125 (fell apart), Honda XR125 (nippy little commuter), Honda SLR650 (Geewhizz), Yamaha Diversion 900S (Smoooooth) written off courtesy of a stupid escaped horse.
