For reconditioning EV batteries, I was referring to replacing the failed cells in a pack to make the battery pack useful - either in a vehicle or in home storage. As you say, doing anything useful with a failed cell is tricky. The kind of recycling that is not going to be economically viable for a long time.

Setting aside the catastrophic "we kept the hose on it for 5hrs till the fire went out" lithium ion cells don't usually fail dead it's more the overall capacity drops. The best you could hope for after say 3 years is the cells to charge up to 80% of the capacity they had initially. For a car that means your 500 mile range is down to 400. (And that's if you slow-charge it all the time as it's the fast charging that does the damage.)

This is where the Elongated Musket had a good idea: repurpose faded Tesla battery packs as home power storage, the energy capacity by volume being less important for a static installation. Slow charged from rooftop solar one could really wring out all the usefulness from lithium ion cells.

When the only joined up thinking is from an outright lunatic one can only wonder about the widespread deployment of EVs
