Mobile phone fraud: 'They stole £22,500 using my banking app'

Quote:
Because the device was locked and password protected, Mr de Simone said that initially, while he was upset his phone had been stolen, he didn't think much more of it until the morning after when he checked his online banking.

"I found both my current account and savings accounts had been drained of £22,500. I was completely shocked. I didn't know how this was possible.

"I don't access my phone using a pin code - I use facial recognition. My Barclays pin is different to my phone pin and they'd need to have both of them."

Barclays check their back end "no problem here" therefore customer at fault. Oh really?

From what I can see from our great friend Google BACS and equivalent bank transfers cannot be reversed beyond the first day or so. Worth checking your bank account day to day I would suggest. IMHO the banks are the central enablers of fraud by making such transfers cast-iron. "But! But! If it were easy to reverse transactions there would be chaos!" Says you, Mr. Fat Cat Banker. I say they just don't want to be hassled with the work.

I mean the individual banks use the FPS but don't make the rules about settling transactions.

They are also right that having the ability to easily reverse normal bank transfers would be chaos. So many businesses rely on payments being final to avoid fraud, that it would just be like reverting to cheques were people need to wait days for confirmation.

If the device you use for banking gets stolen, you need to contact your banks ASAP. People need to assume it is the same as getting their credit card stolen.

I suspect something is dodgy about that guys story as well. Multiple pins are needed to make transactions like that with any phone and bank arrangement.
