Here is the situation - we got a bill for 48 days of use over Nov/Dec/Jan for £2.1k for a workshop area.

3830kwh @ 45.4p + standing charges and vat etc.

Now, this works out as 80kw/h per day which we think is significantly more than we used.

We did have a couple of 1-2kw electric heaters on sporadically and other stuff like lights, laptops etc but all single phase.

My question is, this is a three phase supply and all the single phase stuff comes off one phase only. Are we getting screwed somehow by only using one phase? Should the meter account for this and accumulate the total correctly?

I saw a post on another forum about this very thing recently. Rate had gone from 41p/kwh to £1.23.

There was some speculation that they might have started charging that kwh rate and multiplying it by the number of phases serviced (£0.41 x 3 = £1.23)

thats an interesting one
all the kwh malarkey is just a current measurement over time
which in a household is easy enough

But, if as you suspect they measured one phase and assumed all
the other phases used the same power that's plainly wrong.

it should be monitored by three single phase meters and the total added up and deducted from the last reading to calculate useage

complain like fuck !

Cabnyou compare kWH usage with last year.. assuming the metering set-up has not changed they should be similar..

I asked the power company my question and the said the meter does the calculation and just gives a single kwh used figure.

Just got the bill for January, nearly £1k!

1713kwh used @ 45.4p + taxes and misc fees.

Something fucky going on.

It's not 3x though Thinking
Are you on a mad daily standing charge (another common trick)
Your unit rate is quite shocking even if it's not a mistake mine is 25p day rate and that seemed bad but they have gone up outrageously the past 18 months..
You seem to have used £777 worth approximately then standing charge plus climate levy and VAT can you claim that back?

Standing charge only 25p a day.

The rate seems normal for business when it was locked in recently.

Going to find the old bills and check previous years.

A utility suppliers three phase meter should be reading and totalling from all three phases. This is required as there will always be unbalance of current draw from each phase, as you mentioned the use of single phase equipment.

I have in the past with PLCs with limited I/O space added metering to three phase equipment using only one current transformer on one phase, and then calculated the other two phases but this only worked as the current draw from all three phases were constantly the same. No way this would be acceptable for buildings main meter.
