|

Hi All,
having done my CBT, passed the Theory Test, A1 Mod 1 and A1 Mod 2, I now have a full A1 licence.
Interrogating, on the DVSA site, what categories I am entitled to drive, when I click on "Restrictions apply" I get the following: -
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Vehicles you can provisionally drive (My bold italics)
Category : A
Start date: 16 Sep 1975
End date: 8 Apr 2026
Restrictions apply
Image of category A vehicle
Description
You can drive a motorcycle of a power exceeding 35kW or with a power to weight ratio exceeding 0.2kW per kg, or A motorcycle of a power not exceeding 35kW with a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.2kW per kg and derived from a vehicle of more than double its power. A motor tricycle with a power exceeding 15kW
Restriction codes
01 Eyesight Correction
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I take that to mean that I can ride an A2 or A bike with "L" plates, provided I am wearing the appropriate eyesight correction.
It says nothing about having to be accompanied by an instructor with whom I am in radio communication. Where exactly is this condition stated. I am only interested in statements made on government websites, or in government publications. Statements made by training schools carry no weight as far as I am concerned.

Yep it says exactly what it said back then, in the regulations:
Quote: |
(7) The holder of a provisional licence authorising the driving of a motor bicycle other than a learner motor bicycle shall not drive such a vehicle otherwise than under the supervision of a certified direct access instructor (within the meaning of regulation 64(2)) who is—
(a)present with him on the road while riding another motor bicycle,
(b)able to communicate with him by means of a radio which is not hand-held while in operation,
(c)supervising only that person or only that person and another person who holds such a provisional licence, and
(d)carrying a valid certificate issued in respect of him by the Secretary of State under regulation 65(4),
while he and the instructor are wearing apparel which is fluorescent or (during hours of darkness) is either fluorescent or luminous. |
Simply put, you cannot, and have never since 1983 been allowed to ride any motorcycle over 125cc whilst not supervised by a certified instructor, unless you have a full license for that category.
Just because you've passed the test for A1 doesn't change the restriction for A2 or A. They are, for licensing purposes, entirely different types of vehicle.
It's like saying that you've passed your test in a car so you should be able to put L-plates on a lorry and drive it. You can't do that either. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'
