Anyone else here dabble with radio at all? Been uhf/vhf a while and recently branched out to hf, finding hf a lot more fun but still a massive learning curve.

Got a cheap xiegu 5w qrp on a hustler btv set up in the garden for hf, hitting around 900 miles average sometimes hitting the US however amp is on the way and a baofeng uv5r 5w portable for uhf/vhf and a qyt 8900d 25w for at home/garage, chucked up a diamond x50 yesterday as my x200 met its demise in the wind sadly.

Back in the mid-80s I had yaesu Ft7b to tinker with on 11m but listening mainly.
I was quite surprised they are still circulating on ebay etc.
I only had it a couple of years partly due to having had bike accident

Plug it into ya PC, install chirp, download the csv with all repeaters local and upload. Fuck programming by hand. On the assumption you're licensed and want to transmit of course

Vhf, hf, Yagis, dipoles and all that malarkey is all bit old hat nowadays.
Why fill a room full of energy burning kit and put up an antenna in your garden when you
can use a smartphone or PC to make friends and chat to others across the world.

I can still see a relevance in using radio on board a ship or in planes
or in remote places where land lines, phone masts and sat phones are not an option
but AR seems to offer limited benefits for the cheaper than it was, but still considerable cost.

I still have some PMR446 walkie talkies which are sometimes useful
but that's as far as I'd go to wards AR
