Any recommendations for car breakdown cover suitable for someone who does all their own maintenance and servicing?
Thanks

See if you can do it through your insurance, that's where I've had the best deals. It's also the only place that'll do Euro cover for my >25 year old bike without selling a kidney.

We did insurance a fortnight ago, I'll go and have a look and see if it's possible to get it added on.
Thanks Thumbs Up

Some bank accounts? The ones you pay a bit extra for?

I took out breakdown cover last week with a company called Rescuemycar. It cost me £24.57 and it includes national recovery.
There are cheaper options out there but they all seem to carry an excess if you need to use them.
My insurance company were one of the dearest.

Autoaid, any vehicle you drive/ride, there is an age restriction though which you can pay a little extra to remove.

I use StartRescue personal cover.

For me and the missus its about £120 a year but I've used them 3 times in the past 5 years and they've been excellent all times I've had to rely on them.

Autoaid also get good reviews.

I went with RAC and ticked a few options so it came to £250 for the year...however, I have got my money back multiple times over.

1. Van broke down 4000 miles from home. They paid for flights for 2 and then repatriated the van back to the UK.

2. I have had 2 punctures that have not been repairable and they have paid £150 towards each replacement tyre.

3. I broke down once due to a sensor and they collected me and the car and took me home.

So it really depends on the nature of your travels and other costs whether a "premium" service is worth it. My cover level covers any vehicle I am in, home start, unlimited call outs etc.

I'm with GEM, covers the person rather than specified vehicles and includes bikes and caravans which is what I need. They sub-contract out which I've actually found pretty good due to generally there's always a breakdown company available near me - and on one occasion they sent 2 so whichever got to me first got the job!
£130 for me and my wife inc home cover, and reductions on European cover when we need it.

Autoaid cover me and the missus, i pay a bit extra at 80 quid or so a year but they have recovered both my 40 year old bike and 20 year old truck quickly when breakdows happen.

Dunno why anyone would want to pay RAC money for someone to come and try and fix it then leave you waiting longer. I tell autoaid its fucked and unfixable at the roadside (otherwise id do it myself) and they dont fuck around the just send a recovery unit to me.

The time I knew the sensor had gone and they wouldn't be able to fix it, they sent a recovery truck straight away. No issues.

Last time wifie broke a car and called RAC, well didn't call, text because you can't phone them any more, you have to test. Fcuking hate when you can't rant at some poor telephone chick.

I've used both RAC and AA and I think both are complete dog shit. Both have left me stranded for hours and hours before turning up then in their van then making me wait hours more for the recovery vehicle.

Both have had additional charges that were outwith the scope of the plans I signed up to. With AA even though I was covered for recovery they still added a £100.00 surcharge because it was a "specialist recovery" Rolling Eyes

I'm currently with AutoAid but I've never had to call them out yet.

Ditto. AA did it to me when I snapped a driveshaft. RAC did it to me when the water pump housing exploded and the viscous fan smashed through the radiator. Both times they sent the noddy van despite me telling them outright that the car wasn't going anywhere under its own power any time soon. Immensely frustrating.

Another vote for autoaid here - for the package and cost at least. Covers me and Mrs Daddystu in any vehicle and includes my Zontes 125.

Havent had to use them yet but cant imagine they're any different to the others. Hit n miss probably.

That happened to me with the RAC when my old Renault Laguna with the 1.9 TD lump blew the turbo and started running off it's own oil until it blew itself up. Told them that on the phone to send a recovery truck. Made me wait a good 5 hours for the van to turn up to tell me they were busy and that I will need recovered Rolling Eyes took another few hours for the truck to turn up after that. Cunts.

AA RAC. Arm and leg but they seem to have the best response times and relay service is good.
Mine lapsed during The Rona as I wasn't home.
I've not bought it again.
Murphy's law is destined to learn me a beasting of a lesson.

Thing is like everything nowadays, if you dont have the cover, paying for anything will cost a fortune..

Which ever you choose is better than nothing and paying for a recovery truck from a motorway.

I've used Autoaid three times now

Once for a snapped drivebelt on a scoot (van with trailer came and transported to the nearest bike dealer).

Once for a puncture when I couldn't get the wheel off my car to change it cos the wheel nuts had been tightened to infinity - fixed at roadside.

Can't remember what the 3rd one was for (old age!!) but was fixed.

Longest wait was about an hour.

They also do a nominated vehicle only policy which is cheaper than the personal cover at between £22 and £40 depending on level of cover

Biggest difference I can see between Autoaid and AA/RAC that I can see (besides the price) is Autoaid only cover UK/EU
