Removed chain on the Suzuki- cleaned it, and oiled it- put it back. Went for a ride and got it muddy and water wet again Laughing Fun, pleasant ride though. Mr. Green

Freed up the stuck adjustable brake lever, the detent spring loaded ball bearing had a few spots of rust on it, so it all got took apart, cleaned and greased. Putting the tiny ball back in and quickly closing it all up, without it all exploding all over the floor to be lost forever was tricky though.

If I'm assembling or reassembling things that go ping I find a big clear plastic bag to do it inside.

It's a tip I saw years ago on an RC truck forum, it's definitely saved a few circlips and ball bearings from pinging away into a parallel universe.

My father-in-law lined his garage floor in those big foam jigsaw pieces. Nut and bolt escapees tend to just land rather than bounce off to the nether world.

Changed the rear tyre on the Viffer.

Cursed the previous owner. To get the wheel off, you need to remove the high level exhaust. To remove the exhaust, you need to remove the rear cowl to get at the pillion footrest bolt. To get the fairing off you need to remove the rack. And lining it all up when you try to get it back on (Rack plate, exhaust hanger, footrest, and the threaded hole, bolt through the lot) while holding the exhaust up and fairing out of the way is mental. I had to get the daughter to help.

So somehting is changing, bot sure what yet. I love the sound of the can, but if you can't get the wheel past it, it sort of defeats the point. It would be easier to remove it on a standard low level mounting.

Today (and yesterday) I have been dicking around with baffles.
I'm going to try this out, see what it does. It's obviously just a piece of pipe with a washer tacked on the end I've slid over the original but it'll give me something to work from.

It'll definitely alter the tone more than the volume. Apart from varying the length also consider blanking the end rather than a washer.

Yep I made one for my stepson's 125 so he could MOT it. Made it too long to start with and it was noisy as hell. Shortened it up and it was a lot quieter but never got round to capping the end which would have reduced the noise a whole lot more.

I did the same. Car also lives in there, took it out for a rattle round and got home to find one piece missing from where the rear wheel sits. Buggered if I can work out where it went. Even drove back out down the drive and the track to the closest road and can't see it. Checked up in the wheel wells and everywhere else. Still no idea where it went 6 months later.

Nice to lay on while reply ing the assortment of nuts and bolts etc which come loose tho.

Yeah, those squares aren't suited to the weight of cars. Bikes aren't too bad.

Had to remove radiator and fan to replace tachometer cable.

You and Pete were correct. No less volume but a noticeably deeper tone.
I'm going to do as suggested, lop off some length and blank off the end.
I'll post the results tomorrow. Wink

Don't knock it 'till you try it.

Anywho, the exhaust note now is nice and low. A bit more quiet but far less harsh and raspy than when I started.
I might make shorter baffles still rather than using the originals.

Have a look on eBay/Amazon. Any length, any diameter, dirt cheap (i.e. rusts in seconds) but plenty of material to base things on. One baffle for the week and one for Sunday Best Wink

To be honest, I quite like making stuff like this.
It's very basic and as I'm a general fixit monkey at work, I have everything I need.

The clutch cover on the RC8 was looking a bit tatty because the paint had started peeling off.

Sanded it back.

https://i.postimg.cc/rFn1vcBx/20230319-144831.jpg

Needs more elbow grease, can't be arsed so get the drill out.

https://i.postimg.cc/5yqSTCwm/20230319-150418.jpg

After hand finishing it was a shame to cover with paint but it wouldn't last if left uncovered.

https://i.postimg.cc/W4yVqDqS/20230319-162907.jpg

Got the paints nice and warm in a bucket of hot water.

After a few coats and 350c with the heat gun the black was done and ready for the orange highlights...

https://i.postimg.cc/XqftLLQN/20230319-172259.jpg

Might be passable from afar.

Realised when the neutral lamp blew as soon as I put in a replacement, that the bike might be having a charging issue. Yes, was getting 19v. Checked rectifier, that was okay- then plugged in spare 6v 11ah battery- charge back down to 7.5-8v.

So now finally got arond to receiving, and putting in new 4ah battery for the Suzuki and charging is good again. Went out in the night to test, get some ice cream. Realised on the way back home the headlamp bulb was blown. No surprise- the bulb had cream coloured glass. Though headlamp is AC so not entirely sure if the unbalance in the DC system has somehow affected the AC- but I don't think so- just coincidence. Replaced with a spare 25/25w bulb. Well it was either that or the 18/18w bulb... Embarassed Laughing

I fitted new handlebars to the Zephyr and then sorted out an issue with one of the carbs not having its airbox rubber fitter properly. Carbs were balanced and the idle reset. Much smoother. Thumbs Up

That was followed by a service. Oil and filter changed necessitating the removal of the exhaust system (it's a 4 into 1 that blocks access to both drain plug and filter), new plugs and air filter, brake calliper clean and lube and a general check over.

Old fella's T140 today:

Previous I stumbled upon the choke being slightly on due to the cable tension/linkage. All our previous efforts at tuning were therefore for naught Sad

Went back to stock jets today albeit with naff pod filters (the original airbox long since AWOL) and the bike started and idled much better. There's a bit of a hiccup approaching mid-range out on the road so needs a tweak of the needle height but we're getting there...

Used up half a pack of baby wipes and a few squirts of quick detailer cleaning it. Last ride was on 19th December
bringing it home from first service and it was pissing down and blowing a gale. Being a black bike, the 3 mile ride home
was enough to make it look like I'd taken it off road and it's sat in the shed ever since. Looks much more presentable now.
