I'm being told I must stop talking waffle and show my bike. I'm going to try.

'twas 1986, and suzuki thought they'd do something a bit weird for a change *cough*cough* so they got Mr Hans Muth, he who did design the Suzuki Katana and said "go make us something" and he came back and said "behold, here is some scaffolding I have attached to an orange and brown motorscooterbicycle, because it doth remind me of Tokyo Tower and the districts around that.

https://www.globalsuzuki.com/motorcycle/smgs/digital-archive/images/2_bike/ss4/img_051_02.jpg

And Suzuki said, ok, we'll sell it, and gave it the designation frame designation GK71E, model GSX400X Impulse. They decided to go full tonto though, and the GSXR400 at the time, also got a bit of a restyle in the same manner, and they called it GK71F. It was 1986 ...you know, big hair, shoulder pads...Banarama..anything goes.

Sales were abysmal, and they quickly stuck did a small restyle of the gsxr400 and gave it back its twin headlight. The fairing and stuff had to stay though till the next year.

But what of GK71E? after being hit with the ugly stick, they decided to make the best of a bad situation and plugged a bikini fairing onto it and called it GSX400XS.

recollections may vary which came first, but history shows that the scaffold one had a very small , but loyal folllowing, and the bikini fairing one hardly sold at all, until they were both dropped post 1986 and whatever inventory was left, was left to find its way out of the sales floors.

A few went grey and came to foreign shores, and a fair few ended up in new zealand at knock down prices and were raced to hell and back and used as a courier bike.

Weak points were the coils, stuck under the tank getting all hot and sweaty, but suzuki making this bike out of their esteemed parts bin, pretty much any other coils would fit

wheels? rg400/rg500...tank cap? gsxr750/rg500...engine? a bit unique, SATCS...oil cooled pistons, air cooled cylinders, water cooled head..dedicated oil cooler.

Brakes? deca piston...8 up front, 4 per caliper, and then dual for the rear.

weight? 153kg dry...less than rg400..
power? "59bhp"....same as rg400
(this is because of laws and rules in Japan at the time...both these bikes and power output are subject to enhancements)

Special sauce? a very narrow seating position and low seat height...this is the hairdressers version of a gsxr...and they achieved this using siamese carbs. Specifically, Aisan AS27VW. each carb had twin throats, twin slides, vacuum assisted...same as used on gsx550e.(except thoee were mikunis...after aisan got taken over and mikuni redid a few things). So the behind the motor frame section is very narrow...two carbs instead of 4, but hopefully not losing performance....narrow seat means your legs arent spread so far apart, which means smaller riders find it easier to flat-foot at the lights.

The engine was also fitted into a removable cradle to make maintenance easier...engine code K706.

which bring the story to me...I rode on in South Africa in the early 90's and just gelled with the bike, everything was right for me and my smaller frame...the little motor was smooth, not buzzy, and clearly had an orange powerband installed after 7k, but very tractable and civilised below that. Just a nice nice.

Finding one 30yrs later was a looong story because I didnt look, and then when I started looking they were in barns, broken. Mine came about after the death of an owner who had it since it was imported into the uk, but had been standing for 12years so I'm mostly going through each bit and putting it back to how it was, and scouring old documents and random parts of the net to try match up superceded parts and parts that just simply werent used except of this bike (luckily, this isnt many). I have ll the bits, nothing is missing, theyre just all in different stages of broken/wear/refurbishment.This has been 6 months so far, but weather stopped play in October so hoping to make a move shortly again.

My areas of concern now is the tank refurbishment (rust inside) and maybe replacing the hazy screen.

This is Suzuki's page of the 400 impulse generations...the one under discussion is gen2.
https://www.globalsuzuki.com/motorcycle/smgs/digital-archive/2_bike/ss4_051.php
Clearly the styling was a bit ahead of its time...but somehow the scaffolding version is starting to grow on me with the trend of modern styling nowdays, nakeds etc

Heres how mine will look once done, although it came with orange seats so Ive made them orange again

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5f/GSX400XS.JPG/800px-GSX400XS.JPG

I'm waiting until zx4rr have arrived on our lovely shores to do a comparison. In a few years it'll be a historic bike. Hopefully by then I can ride around in peace.

wee edit: colourways were emperor brown metallic, suzuki code 29F...and then a funky blue which also looked black, a silver version, and then a pearl version...Ive only seen the pearl one in new zealand photos, so maybe dealers there werent charmed with brown. Seems they could be had with both seats black, or both seats orange...no rhyme or reason to this that I can see

second edit: suzuki's brochure of 1986 offering:
https://www.suzukicycles.org/1980-1989/1986c.shtml#gsc.tab=0

and here is a blue one, in some sort of museum
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjkxO4bPTvw

last edit: here is one of the few videos I have found of one being ridden from cold etc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PI7Qvahibtc

Let's face it, it's not the ugliest bike Suzuki have made. The B-King for example.

I have seen remarkable results with deox-C for removing rust from inside tanks.

front and rear brake pistons seized, all orings replaced and calipers and pistons polished and ORANGE braided hoses fitted (my bike, my rules)

every oring in carbs, replaced.

random cables replaced, some cam caps replaced and plastigauged (no lectures pls), and the list goes on...but it starts and idles now and goes forwards

Light orange seat? seriously?
Black would have been conservative and safe as well as practical
Red would been in keeping with the existing contrasting colour scheme.

Your bike your rules, but that orange seat doesn't work for me.

in reality outside of whatever-was-photoshop in 1986...that was 100% the seat colour

I get a feeling i should put a big NSFW into the title of this thread...but...it was the '80's...you HAD to have been there man..

Activating Sheldon mode: Originally, the word SUZUKI on the tank, the letters GSX400X on the rear sidecovers, and the seats, were the same orange.
The frame was close, but a redder shade, and the swingarm/sidestand/wheels matches...
Going by too many photos of this bike, some tanks that have been repainted, probably by owner choice/difficulty in matching, the word SUZUKI is now more often red.(like the picture above...thats been repainted I'm almost 100% sure).

A lot of the bike photos I've seen frames have been stripped, and totally repainted, and the frames have been painted "red" and its clearly the wrong red...or the tank/sidecovers are now black, instead of "brown".

I try keep things original...but brake hoses OEM arent to be found, so orange braided hoses it was....there are three shades here...a red, an orange, and a brown....I too think a black seat is more practical..in the background of my photo you can see a black seat that previous owner had extra padding added and recovered...Ive kept this one and sourced a stuffed set of seats and recovered OEM so the bike is as it should be, with the option of comfy-chair if needed. But when comfy chair is fitted then the sidepanels dont fit and the lines dont line up and everything just looks bad.

check this video at 45seconds
https://youtu.be/WQOZHtaV1QA?t=45

four oranges...tank words, sidecovers words, seat, SUZUKI above rear light=match...
frame and swingarm=match, red
plastics=match, brown/bronze whateves.

/de-activates Sheldon mode

I guess I just want the exact bike I enjoyed riding, as much as possible.

Anything other than "Cafe Racer" is fine Very Happy

Redoing the colour scheme to make more sense I think you could get away with, as long as it matched everyone's hazy memory of over 30 years ago. The mind's eye remembers things differently to absolute reality.

Why the heck did I agree to do this photoshoot? Oh, it was for an obscure brochure, and the internet wasnt really a thing...so nobody would ever find out

SATCS - Suzuki Advanced Triple (or...three-way..) Cooling System (air, oil and water)
DPBS - Deca Piston Brake system - Deca, as in ten....ten pistons...four per front caliper, and then two for the rear...the cooler bikes like rg400/rg500/gsxr750 etc had a sticker running down the fork legs that said "DECA PISTON"...but the impulse is a much more refined, undercover type bike where we dont really like to stand out, so opted not to have that sticker (pmsl)

some more pictures.

better photo of the seat in more natural light...
what i found when i took off the intake to replace orings...ugh...sealant
photos of the carbs..single diaphragm actuates both slides, in a single carb...with two main jets, two pilots, one needle/seat etc per float bowl...yeah, wikkid innit.
for those who find this interesting, cylinder 1 and 4 is a 96 main jet, while 2 and 3 are a 98.
and my coil pack conversion, so that the coils dont die..i just deleted them. used denso stick coils/plug coils/whatever is the cool word equivalents. I want to make a bracket running across the top of them to secure them, although they dont really move...really tight fit onto the spark plugs.

power output was limited to 59hp due to japanese rules, and this was achieved by sticking in a fairly boring rev limiter at 11.5k-ish...which was cdi controlled to cut spark to cyl 1 and 4. A popular conversion was to run two cdi's..its a wasted spark system, so each cdi thought it was controlling cyl 2 and 3 ergo no rev limiter., and no artificial power limiter either. I havent delved into this and not much info is available on what triggered it..Ive read of an optical circuilt in the speedo thats meant to trigger at 180kmph, and Ive read the cdi counting the revs etc...there is no gear indicator, so if it was counting revs it would do it in every gear, and if it was via speedo then you could theoretically fit a kmph-->mph converter on the the drive end so it would only trigger at "180mph".

Anyway...stuff all of that for a game of soldiers...gsx550e didnt have a rev limiter in the cdi, was 4 cyl, and had the same advance curve. So thats the cdi Ive picked to wire in once I start working on her again this season The original cdi is probably ripe for dying of old age by now.

On that topic, mr internet is full of some stories worth taking with some salt, but anyway...
"In NZ the Suzuki GSX400X Impulse was the courier riders choice for many years as it has an unbreakable engine, Full time oil pump, huge carrying capacity (I had mine loaded with over 220kg of luggage), quick and nimble both on the open road, and in town. Not only cheaper (1/2 the cost), but more reliable than its flasher, heavier, fully faired brother, the GSX400rf.

Formula three racers also liked it. In standard trim (less mirrors and indicators) it would quite happily pull 237+Km down the back straight at Pukekohe raceway, then handle the judder bars under full brakes through the hairpin.."

Was the Kiwi version limited? Might have been "unbreakable" because (artificially) you couldn't rev the shit out of it Thinking

Certainly restricted Jap home market bikes I've had had an optical sensor in the back of the speedo and effectively two needles, one on the inside which is more of a notched disc with the notch co-inciding with the max speed restriction position. When it reaches the limited speed, the sensor is triggered by the quadrant blocking or unblocking (can't remember which) the optical switch and cuts the spark to two cylinders.

The easy way to bypass it is to take the sensor off, stick something in it to replicate the notched disc and tape it up.

The better way to bypass it is to work out what resistance it has when not triggered and replace it with a voltage divider. You can't just remove it, the CDI needs a signal.

restricted bikes of that era usually have a little light on the speedo that comes on at 55mph too.

Don't know if your system is the same. Optical switch looks like this.

we have the little 80kmph red light that comes on (with japanese writing under it). I was going to highjack that for the classic "battery not charging light" once I had replaced the cdi with one that doesnt care about such things.

btw, googling the optical sensor and i come about a post on this forum for a chap with vfr750 and some carb questions (yes...keihin...i'm just trying to get a good intro for this spreadsheet...)...maybe this mikuni spreadsheet can help..

The bits in blue at the top are selectable dropdown...stick in your worn and oval needle that nobody makes anymore and clip position and it'll show you your fuelling curve.

then stick in a needle type that you CAN get, and compare the curve to decide if its the same enough...fiddling with clip positions etc.

I've been accused by a young lady called Greta many many times of driving down to Southend with a boot full of plastic straws and personally throwing them into the ocean, but what I actually like doing is to take stuff that most people wouldve considered unfixable landfill, and you know, fixing them.

Thanks for that. I got the carb restriction sorted by dynojetting it. The engine was more fundamentally restricted than just the carbs though. I'm back running my old UK spec VFR now and the import one is a rolling spares source.

Looks much better with a fairing than that horrible scaffolding underneath. Enjoy it, those suzuki 400 4cyl engines have always been a beaut to ride if you dont need warp speed everywhere.

stinkwheel Well I just had my hands up a pigs fanny. Which makes your concerns pale into insignificance.
