Gove to consider banning the sale of Nitrous Oxide.

https://news.sky.com/story/nitrous-oxide-to-be-banned-under-plans-to-clamp-down-on-anti-social-behaviour-12842786

I'm all for natural selection in these matter.

Weak genetic materials should be permitted permitted to run their course.

The real problem isn't kids doing drugs it's that they don't take their rubbish away. If there weren't piles of cannisters everywhere the government wouldn't have even noticed the problem.

In that case they'll shit their pants when they see the state of the place near take-away joints.

Water firms seem to be dumping shit all over and that doesn't get an insta ban

It's just low hanging fruit from the tories trying to be seen hard on yobs, whilst stabbings/robbing are going on daily and the Justice system is up shit creek

Trying to nip it in the bud, perhaps. Seems the right approach to me.

Nipping it in the bud? They couldn't stop smack, speed, e, cannabis etc. for the last 50 years and NOS has been a thing for at least 5 years.

That ship has sailed, offloaded it's cargo, been sunk, raised, sailed 4 times round the world etc.

There were balloons going round parties when I was at college and I graduated 23 years ago.

I was being conservative. I've not been to a party for 10 years. TBH it wasn't something I did but I do remember people doing it at raves back in the middle 90s.

I didn't bother, I was on gurners and speed....

It's a bit like people who lived through the 60s.

Is laughing gas used in veterinarianism? (Is that a word?). How does it manifest in animals?

Prof David Nutt, from Imperial College London's department of medicine, says: "Scientific evidence suggests that there is around one death per year in the UK from around 1 million nitrous oxide users.

"A comparison with alcohol would be that around 28,000 deaths happen per year in around 40 million users of alcohol," he adds.

Quote:
Several drugs charities have criticised the announcement, claiming criminalising possession could lead to the drug becoming more dangerous.

Steve Rolles, senior policy analyst at the Transform Drug Policy Foundation, said: "The idea that this is a deterrent effect is ridiculous it just criminalises users and will hand control of the product to criminal gangs.

"This is just political theatre - if you need any proof you just need to see that they have ignored their own advisers. This is a particularly ugly example of performative politics."

Transform Drug Policy Foundation is a charity which campaigns for drugs to be legalised and regulated.

Prof Adam Winstock, an addiction medicine specialist and founder of the Global Drug Survey, told the BBC that getting a criminal record "is going to be a far greater harm than the risks for the vast majority of people using nitrous oxide".

Reducing the risks of nitrous oxide is "better achieved with smart education, not blunt regulation that may compound existing harms and create new ones", he added.

Yay for Tory logic yet again.

Yes, it's used as part of anaesthetic gas. It's a very good analgesic so you use it alongside other drugs to reduce the amount of those you need to use. It also has some complex but useful effects on the dynamics of fluid/gas absorbtion. In short, if you play your cards right you can use it to make patients become anaesthetised more quickly using less anaesthetic, be more stable under anaesthetic and make them recover more quickly afterwards.

We use it in G-cylinders, each of which holds 13,800 litres of nitrous oxide. Typically I'd use a 60:40 nitrous to oxygen mix with 1/2 to 2% of a volatile agent like isoflourane to maintain surgical anesthesia.

There's a risk of causing hypoxia if you use too much of it in the absence of pure oxygen to mix it with. A lot of the kiddywinkles huffing balloons are actually feeling dizzy because of hypoxia rahter than being high on nitrous. You'd get a similar effect huffing helium which is totally inert. On the plus side, if you overdo it and pass out, you let go of the balloon and recover.

EDIT: It's very safe but there are cumulative effects from chronic exposure which is why inadequately ventilated maternity units stopped using gas and air recently to protect their staff. Which is odd because our staff have to periodically wear gas monitors to check this isn't happening so I can't work out why the NHS don't have to do the same and if it was a problem, would have picked it up decades ago.

Am I right in saying not being able to expel Carbon Dioxide would kill you before hypoxia?

Problem there is you can. Breathe in nitrous, breathe out the carbon dioxide mixed with the nitrous. No oxygen. If you are re-breathing the gas you breathe out, carbon dioxide will build up and make you feel out of breath. If you breathe out normally, it wont.

Nothing like conflating two seperate problems....

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-65088692

TLDR: Mother who's son died after inhaling Butane (much more dangerous) is pleased that NOS is being banned.

I've been given it several times myself, when a nice man has been shoving a camera round my bowels - believe me, that doesn't count as recreational use. However, I can't say I've ever experienced any sort of euphoria or high from using it (even any analgesic properties were pretty marginal, TBH). Administered too dilute, I suppose?
