Got this today, I only mention it as it slipped past Gmail's spam filter:

It's genuine. Laughing

"The cyberattack on white-shoe law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft has put the personal information of over 90,000 clients at risk.

On the notice to the affected clients on March 30, 2023, the prestigious law firm stated that an unauthorized third party gained remote access to the company’s systems on November 15, 2022.

Reportedly, the hackers were able to acquire sensitive information from the network, which included documents containing personal information belonging to the company’s customers, including names and Social Security numbers.

The Office of the Maine Attorney General said that the current breach was discovered on November 16, 2022, and that 93,211 people were affected."

Now I'm curious as to why an American law firm I've never heard of supposedly has my details or is it one of those emails supposedly about a real event. There's a lot of typos and grammatical errors, I'd expect better from lawyers.

Here's the email in full: https://www.doj.nh.gov/consumer/security-breaches/documents/cadwalader-wickersham-taft-20230404.pdf

But it kind of sounds like it should have arrive by post rather than email.

The genuine letter gives https://enroll.krollmonitoring.com/ as the URL for signing up to the free identity monitoring service, what URL does the link in the email open?

Yeah, the email is similar but with a few small errors:

We are writing to let you know about a cybersecurity incident involving your personal information held by Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP. We deeply regret that this has occurred. Keeping personal information safe and secure is very important to us and, as you will see below, we have taken robust steps to address the incident and protect your interests. Please read this entire letter as it contains information to help keep your information secure.

WHAT HAPPENED?
Between 15-16 November 2022, an unauthorized third party gained remote access to our systems and acquired certain information from our network, including documents containing some of your personal information. As a large international law firm, we occasionally receive information from our clientsand other third-parties, including personal information, which we process in our normal courseof business in connection with the services we provide..

Our investigation has determined that the unauthorized third party acquired some of your personal information, including your name, name and political affiliation.

Targeted online monitoring has not revealed any indication that your personal information has been leaked or otherwise misused by the unauthorized third party. If this were to occur, this would expose you to a greater risk of identity theft or fraud, financial loss, and non-material loss.

WHAT WE ARE DOING
Upon learning of this incident, we quickly took steps to stop the unauthorized access and began a thorough forensic investigation with the assistance of outside cybersecurity experts. We have also reported this incident to law enforcement and relevant regulators, as well as taking steps to further strengthen our network.

Although at this time we have no indication of any misuse of your information and our investigation has not identified any suggestion that the unauthorized third-party was targeting your personal information, we have engaged Kroll Information Assurance, LLC to provide two years of identity monitoring services at no cost to you. Kroll is a global leader in risk mitigation and response, and their team has extensive experience helping people who have sustained an unintentional exposure of confidential data. Your identity monitoring services include Web Watcher, Fraud Consultation, and Identity Theft Restoration.

Provide your Activation Code: EG7J-ZPRK-DAWD-D5HP and your Verification ID: .

WHAT YOU CAN DO
We strongly encourage you to take advantage of the credit monitoring and identity theft protection services we are providing to you free of charge. Remain vigilant and carefully review your online and financial accounts for any suspicious activity.

If you detect any suspicious activity on an account, you should change the password and security questions associated with the account, and promptly notify the financial institution or company with which the account is maintained. You should also promptly report any fraudulent activity or any suspected incidence of identity theft to the proper law enforcement authority.

Once again, we sincerely regret that this incident has occurred and have taken robust steps to address it. If you have any questions about the incident, please contact us at 0800 208 1071.

Yours sincerely,

Beth Taylor

Take Advantage of Your Identity Monitoring Services

You’ve been provided with access to the following services from Kroll:

Web Watcher
Web Watcher monitors internet sites where criminals may buy, sell, and trade personal identity information. An alert will be generated if evidence of your personal identity information is found.

Credit Monitoring
You will receive alerts when there are changes to your credit data – for instance, when a new application for credit is made in your name. If you do not recognise the activity you will have the option to call a Kroll fraud specialist who can help you to determine if it is an indication of identity theft. Monitoring services do not affect your credit score and will not appear as a hard inquiry on your credit report.

Fraud Consultation
You have unlimited access to consultation with a Kroll fraud specialist. Support includes showing you the most effective ways to protect your identity, explaining your rights and protections under the law, assistance with fraud alerts, and interpreting how personal information is accessed and used, including investigating suspicious activity that could be tied to an identity theft event.

Identity Theft Restoration
If you become a victim of identity theft, a Kroll investigator will work on your behalf to resolve related issues. You will have access to a dedicated investigator who understands your issues and can do most of the work for you.
