I might try a cheap smart watch just to try one but im a bit skeptical about them. They look like potential drawer lurkers that will go the way of my iPod.

Im looking at getting a new watch.

Cheap a Casio divers watch £50ish
Pros. Cheap obv and very clear to tell the time.
Cons. I can't really think of any except the resin strap will be crap.

Not so cheap a Luminox, north of £200
Pros. Cool glow in the dark tritium, is also clear and will last.
Cons. Im tight so will be painful parting with the cash.

What should one do?

In my opinion quartz watches have absolutely no fucking soul and I wouldn't buy one (even from a high-end brand). Either of these watches are infinitely better imho than the ones you're looking at and both have automatic movements:

A selection of vegetables. I have my last appointment with my Social prescriber this week and I promised her
that I'd cook something for her to say thank you for being so nice to me and helping me in ways that aren't really
what she's there for. Trying to get an introverted autistic basket case to do anything social is a bit of a tall order and
instead she has just been someone to talk to in the absence of anyone else. In our chats she revealed she is a vegetarian
so I'm making her and her fella some vegetable curry as a thank you even if despite over 6 hours with her still means
I'm still staying firmly locked inside my house for the foreseeable future.

For those non watch people here, what's the alternative and what's the difference? I have no clue.

Mechanical watches are watches that use a movement to turn the hands on the watch face and display the time. A movement is an arrangement of gears, pinions, rockers, pulleys, pendulums, tourbillions, ratchets, jewel bearings, springs, escapements, bobs, balances, etc that utilise the power of a mechanically wound spring to make the watch work. They require a level of precision beyond that which is required for a quartz watch.

Automatic watchesare mechanical watches where the mainspring doesn't need to be wound by hand but the movement of the arm/ body of the wearer causes the mainspring to be wound.

Quartz watches use an electronic oscillator regulated by a quartz crystal between a tuning fork to provide the increments of time on the watch face. This can be output digitally or by turning a gear to give the appearance of an analogue watch. Quartz watches are powered by batteries.

Generally looking at the second hand of a watch is the tell-tale sign. A mechanical/ automatic watch will have a sweeping hand that moves constantly. A quartz watch will have a tick-tock motion where the second hand moves then stops until it has to move again. The even bigger tell-tale is that if the watch needs a batter then it's quartz, if it doesn't need one then it's an automatic.

Quartz watches are more accurate than mechanical ones by their nature but they are digital, heartless and soulless.

There againsome of us just want a watch to tell the time, and have absolutely uninterested whether any mechanical device has a soul when they don't even think people have them.

Last year I tried to buy a pair of Chopard SCHC34M sunglasses but couldn't get any so I settled on a pair of Prada Linea Rossa PS55WS:

But today I was finally able to find somewhere with stock, it's not the version I wanted (silver) specifically but I also really like the gunmetal colour so I just went for it. I expect them to be a little like marmite but I love the look of them.

I would NOT pay £300 for any watch. I think i paid half of that for this and it's been my goto watch for the last 2 or 3 years plus a good 3 years using the previous model. I get a good 2 days out of one charge plus it can receive calls if i absolutely can't reach a phone to answer it.

It's also big enough (and metal enough) to be robust and stand up to some proper abuse and because the glass is recessed inside a metal ring, there's no chance of shattering it when you clip an edge - as other watches have done.

ATEOTD watches are a highly personal thing - i'd never get rid of the Seikos i have, i really like them - i'm just not at the point where i want to ditch this in place of them.

Random shit on special offer, that's how I roll. This week: Angioletti Italian Cider. Weird concept Smile If you're more of a fan of dry ciders I'd certainly recommend it Thumbs Up

If you like cider, seek out 'Black Rat'

Admittedly it's no longer the mental stuff it was when I was drinking the rough stuff but Ste and the No.1 both like it.

My main thing is to avoid "factory lager" - the Bud Lights and Fosters of this world - so I'm glad of the general IPA vibe these days but cider makes for a nice palette cleanser... that's my excuse anyway Wink

So you'd favour Black Rat over Rattler? Cornwall does seem to have a much larger impact on society than mere geography would grant it Thinking

I stopped drinking cider when I was about 17 so really can't advise. I know Ste and the No.1 like it but thats about it.

Apart from Thatchers Gold. It tastes just as shit as it tasted 35 years ago when it was orange and tasted like shit and got you really pissed, which, along with how cheap it was, was the only reason why you drank it.

Mendip magic, may have been off the mendips but it wasn't magic, tasted like shit and you'd be found in a hedge in the morning...

Anyhoo, I've now moved on to the "commercial" variant of Rattler which is a mere 6% (whereas the draught "in country" version is >8%) and I'd peg it as a medium versus the previous Italian cider.
