Looking to buy a used bike which is advertised and speedo shows as having approx 22k miles. DVLA check has MOT showing milage as 25.5k miles. Any thought on why this could be?

It’s a long way for me to travel to see the bike so wondering if it’s better just to leave and look for another one?

Did a HPI check and it had a private plate on at some point, could this be relevant/reason for discrepancy?

Could be a ringer, could be a new speedo from a fucked bike.

Won't know without personally looking at the bike.

The MOT person made a mistake with the mileage is my guess.

How about "the HPI check is asking for the chassis number, mind sending me a photo?" see what reaction you get.

I’ve had all these thoughts. Bike is being sold and registered at a nice house in a nice-ish area. I will go have a look and check the VIN’s match up and guess that’s the best I can do.

If it is due to MOT tester input error can this be altered at the next MOT?

There's no reason to wait that long.

https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/correcting-mot-certificate-mistakes

But you would need to show what the mileage was on the date of the MOT where it was recorded wrongly.

Can you post a link to the advert?

You could ask the seller what's going on with that.

Seems like a good advert in fairness, used up his picture allocation and put lots in the description which I usually take as a good sign.

for such a low percentage discrepancy I wouldn't be worried. It's more likely to be a typo by the MOT guy. They go through it so quick it's really easy to do.

If it was ten times the mileage or something, then I'd worry.

Seller seems legit to me. Message him and ask the question directly but it may well be a recycled ad and it's been
up for sale for a while or sometime previously, looking at his previous sales there's a lot of happy buyers and some
premium goods sold. Wish I could afford a nice detached house with garage in Loughton with a large beautifully kept
garden. I don't think this guy is a chancer or a scummer. Decently written ad, (-1 point for 'breaks Laughing ) lots of
detail, LOADS of pictures. If that was what I was on the hunt for bike wise then I'd go take a look. He's been selling on
Ebay since 2004. You can tell a lot about someone from how they keep their garden.

99.9999% sure that's an error by the MOT person and the only reason the owner hasn't bothered to have it corrected is because they know how meaningless such a discrepancy is.

As stinkwheel says, ask the seller and see what they have to say about it.

Wonder why they're not bothering to put a fresh MOT on it.

I agree. That small discrepancy isn't someone clocking it or trying to fool you with the milage. Wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Thumbs Up

nice garden. As said...says a lot.

My shitbox has a decimal point on the digital display for mileage. Its tiny...this means MOT shows 30k miles +change instead of 3k miles (which it actually is.....). I'll tell the next MOT man and see whats up.

Sometimes, legit things happen. I'm of the opinion the bike in the advert seems ok and theres no other warning signs.

I remember my mate buying a secondhand Ford Sierra in the 80s. Only 59,000 miles on the clock. A little while later it got to 59,999 miles and clicked over.....back to 50,000 miles again. Who knows how many times it had done that.

I'd be more interested in the number of registered keepers on that bike. It looks well used and if I recall they didn't have the best reputation for reliability, so it may have been repaired, sold, repaired, sold, repaired.... you gat my drift...

Is that even an issue? I've bought bikes, ridden for a few hundred miles and got rid because it didn't suit me. Nothing wrong with the bike.

I know people who get different bikes every year.

This.

My GSXS has had some silly number of owners, but it's in beautiful condition. I've bought 1 owner bikes that have been lash ups, and I've bought 10 owner bikes that have been mint.
