AFAIK it's more cultural than genetic. For example you can find African countries where people are measurably thick as shit but that usually coincides with "supreme dictator for life" regimes.

Have you spoken to many Americans? They are some of the dumbest people I've ever encountered.

A lot of it is more down to the education system people are subject to rather than any genetic traits.

You look at this in the wrong way, and the RAF will not drop the STEM degree requirement. What is needed it to encourage more diverse successful applications for STEM degrees, and obviously therefore successfully completed degree courses.

This is where the problem lies and this is where it needs to be fixed.

The ol’ equality of opportunity vs. equality of outcome conundrum.

What’s stopping all but white men from qualifying for STEM degree courses?

I haven't said anything about it being genetic. I have made no assertion of what causes it - merely that it is so - and drawn from the fact that the Chinese / Asian results are very different to the Black heritage numbers it is unlikely in the extreme to be some form of systemic racism that everyone will no doubt clamour to say it is.

If I was to have a stab in the dark (lol) about what causes it, I would almost certainly go towards culture and work ethic. This gradient from Chinese - White - Black seems to prevail in just about every measurable sphere and I really don't think it's that black people are given naff schooling compared to everyone else.

I don't buy it for a second.

I grew up in a culture where there was active competition to be as thick as possible. Yorkshire.

By the same token why is there only 1 female commissioned officer for every 20 male commissioned officer?

Let your misogyny flow.....

Bearing in mind the aforementioned equality of opportunity (indeed a recruitment bias away from males, as we’ve heard), it beats me. How do you explain it?

Why are only 25% of teachers male. Let your misandry flow.....

You can tell how hollow these arguments are by turning the situation around 180. Nobody wants to fix the divide on low paid jobs, nobody wants to level up binmen sorry I mean binpeople. And you know full well the uproar that would come if men decided to muscle in on traditionally female sectors.

The quota mantra of 'representing the community we serve' is so ironic to me. We must have diversity because it's good for us (how and why not elaborated on) but yet we expect that across that diversity all races, cultures, genders and ages will have the same life choices and desires from their careers. That's idiotic.

I have met female RAF pilots so I'm not sure. I know there is a higher proportion of STEM engineers in the civilian realm so it may be a view on the culture of commisioned RAF officers.

I know that the stereotyoe of RAF officers insisting on the best hotels etc. is true and they are very needy, which is a fucking nightmare for me.

Aside from that, I'm an accountant and not a psychologist so cannot really help.

When we had female officers coming through in the MN (started in the 90's) there was push back because of the physicalities of the job. I had an Indian female engineer come to the ship for training and she could run rings round me (not difficult, I know) theoretically. The problem was she was a tiny slip of a girl who'd struggle to undo a tight 10 mil bolt.

Same with the deck officers. At that time deck valves were huge extended spindle gate valves, about 50 turns to open and shut with a wheel key in some cases so the females had to take a brawny sailer with them to help. 2 people doing 1 persons job. I never had a female office on my ship that couldn't do the job mentally, but the physical interferred.

Fast forward a decade and automation and remote operation of valves was becoming the norm and the physical aspect was less of a problem. Nowadays female officers are common and well rexpected in the buisness.

I can understand that with the non-comms, but most of the commisioned engineers I've met have no idea what a fucking torque wrench is.

They don't ever get their hands dirty.

In the merch they do. Untill you get 3 stripes or more then you can delegate what you want.

Edited to add, my step father was a Major of the Royal engineers and his expertise was fortifications. He didn't have a clue how an engine worked.

3 Strips in military is just a sergeant. Thats massively away from commisioned.

I expect an engineer that flies planes to know what the people who maintain said plane use to maintain it. They're a bit useless as a chief engineer once they get promoted if they don't.

Um, 3 stripes in the Royal Navy is a commander, 4 is a Captain. The Merch follows sea etiquette, not the land lubbers. Wink

There is a tendency for men to have better spatial awareness than women. That's not to say women can't fly jet fighters just that not so many are going to be as suited to it as men. Why are such facts deemed problematic? It smacks of "there is no graphite on the roof" Sad

Diversity is our strength.

The exoteric meaning of "our" in this statement encompasses the entire community (your town, country, the company workforce, etc.) whereas with the esoteric meaning "our" refers only to the "in-group" members as in:

Diversity is our strength, not yours.

How diverse is our little corner of the interwebs? How might our conversation be affected if there was input from more diverse perspectives?

How diverse has leisure biking ever been? I'n my group of people (about 20) we have 1 Asian guy. We have a lot of women out though, either pillion or on their own bikes.

What does "diverse" even mean? Should we be adding a colour swatch to the forum registration process?

TBF there are too many Celts on here, that has to skew things Laughing I'd be interested in the perspectives of Indians or Filipinos as they seem mad keen on bikes but from the utilitarian direction. They also speak English which would be the major hurdle for other "diverse peoples" - we're really not going to see a big Chinese or Japanese contingent turn up, for example.

But this is a specialist forum so that in itself is problematic Wink We need to hear more from cyclists, open up lorry, car, horse and pedestrian sections, maybe air and boat travel... it never ends.
