I know we've touched on it before and pretty well everyone expects it to happen. Well, a step closer now.
A new report from The Centre of Policy Studies has revealed that drivers in the UK should be taxed by the mile when behind the wheel once electric vehicles (EVs) become the most popular car of choice.
and
Data from the report was shared with MPs on Wednesday 24th May, and called for an urgent and 'major overhaul' of the UK's motoring taxation system.

So, it's coming. I suppose how it's implemented could make or break the government of the time. Get it wrong and the backlash at the polls could be epic. A lot of people won't be happy with big brother tracking their every move. Look at ID cards and that isn't anywhere as intrusive

One other thing in that article....
The report recommends a per mile taxation scheme in the UK to initially apply to electric cars before being expanded to cover all vehicles.

Logical but I doubt EV vehicle drivers will be happy at being taxed first and ICE drivers will wince at being taxed twice. And what about motorbikes? I suppose we will be an afterthought tagged on the end or will they have killed off leisure biking by then?

It always is to an extent. The further you drive, the more petrol/diesel you use, thus the more tax you pay.

When everything is EV, this tax income has to be replaced somehow.

Taxed for what? Taxed to repair roads or taxed just for the sake of it (looking at you, Death Duties.)

Per mile on EVs is just because they can. Most if not all will have telematics built-in (quite a few final generation ICE cars do too.) I doubt politicians would be brave enough to mandate retro-fitting to existing vehicles, not for a while anyway.

Motorcycles will get overlooked (hopefully) in the same way that auto-navigation, auto-braking, speed limiting, etc. are impractical on such platform.

What exactly do you suggest is taxed to replace the tax and duty on liquid fuel when people stop using it?

By all means say that nothing is taxed in replacement but I'll point out that most tax is spent on defence.

Could you use this for a practical PayPerMile system? I thought at present a car had to be plugged into a computer to read any data.

edited to ad. If this is the case, surely it has to be calibrated and certified for taxation like petrol pumps are at present.

There won't need to be the income stream from EVs because it'll be offset by the health savings of less pollution surely Wink

And no, more tax is spent on the NHS, pensions, social security, education than defence.

Okay. Fair enough.

Would you like to do away with the NHS instead?

For info, welfare expenditure includes state pension and contributory benefits which are paid for by ni contributions.

I think a large number of people will move away from an ownership model anyway. It seems logical in urban areas. Quite a few of my mates are doing it now. They ride an E-bike or a scooter most of the time or take the bus and hire a car club E-car by the hour when they need one for shopping or similar. They rent a car/van if they are doing a longer journey or need to shift something bigger. Works out cheaper in the end.

Pay be mile would probably be a good thing for me anyway because I currently have to tax 4 vehicles but can only use one at a time. Although I'm not sure how they'd propose fitting a tracker to my enfield.

Doesn't your enfield use petrol and is taxed that way?
