Today I would have been sharing pics of me spanking my monkey....bike.... across Spanish hillsides - but alas that was not meant to be.

Had a stag do to go to in Benidorm. Decided I'd take the evenings easy and go out on the bike in the day. However, disaster struck just 9 hours before I was due to leave. Mother dearest had an aneurism which tore the wall of her aorta, and she needed 13 hours worth of emergency surgery to save her life. Tough old girl came through it, and is now just recovering from the batshit crazy drugs.

So, no pics of Spanish vistas I'm afraid.

A couple of weeks ago the weather was nice for one day so I got out. Went to Clare in Suffolk, where the disused railway station has been lovingly restored and turned into a cafe. A really nice find, and a nice walk around the old railway buildings.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52858249316_f122e84a93_b.jpg

And then today I just went out for a ride as the weather was too nice not to, but I didn't have loads of time to myself - a quick ~60 miles or so taking in a local car show.

And this turned up:

Peak District weekend with a mate.

Weather was generally miserable but we managed to get there and get pitched up in the dry, which is always a bonus.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52882920044_1a6edb5050_c.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52882920279_79155073f0_c.jpg

Went to Derwent Dam.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52882186827_fcf2bd3d4b_c.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52882920379_5e19eebb21_c.jpg

Then the weather got really miserable so we chinned off riding and went to the local beer festival instead.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52882919994_4fdf5a5cd9_c.jpg

Well I say local, it was about 5 miles away. 5 miles in Derbyshire is, so it turns out, somewhat insurmountable. Ended up with a taxi driver who wasn't a taxi driver, just a random earning some dough on the side. He got the job done admirably, turned up on time and didn't even moan at my horrendous beer / curry farts on the way back.

The next day the weather looked much better further north, so we headed off that way up to Yorkshire Dales.

Did an amazing bit of road from Stainforth towards Hawton Gill - absolutely stunning scenery. Then headed back down, through Deepdale to end up at Wensleydale cheese creamery for some free cheese samples, mmm.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52882186492_de9543bb67_c.jpg

And finally we did Buttertubbs Pass, before making our way back down south.

Pretty good weekend all told.

Very nearly ended up over there myself yesterday. Haven't been for at least a year maybe 18 months.

Little bimble on the MT10, no pics but just had a ride around following my nose. Ended up in Tetbury. Notable events
found the edge of my back tyre both sides, the rev limiter once or twice and hit 150 (k)mph Whistle for a few moments
on the M4 heading back home. Had to tuck a bit, it was quite windy. Laughing Didn't get pics because I never stopped.

Woke up VERY early and just decided to get out there.

100 ish miles around Dengie Peninsula and surrounding towns, to some of the same old stops I always go to:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52929351605_57e2d46823_c.jpg

Nice to have the Enfield back up and MOT'd. It's harder work to cover miles on than the BM but in no traffic situations like this morning at 6 ish, you can carry pace and feel like you're flying.

As rarely as I ride, I do sometimes feel the performance of my bike does encourage me to go a bit stupid when I do,
I wonder if downsizing to something like a 400 wouldn't rein me in a bit before I do myself a mischief. Because of this
I also always feel the need to wear FULL kit when I do ride which means I don't really want to get off the bike and take
a stroll as I'm baking hot in seconds. (especially carrying two and a half unnecessary stones of fat.) I expect it's quite
liberating to ride in normal clothes but because I always end up North of 100 when I do get out, self preservation makes
me wear half a ton of dead cow, kangaroo and D30. The new 4 pot 2023 Kawasaki Ninja ZX4R 400 is definitely piquing my
interest. Looks like a hoot. Will definitely take one for a test ride soon to see if its as much fun as it looks. suns out today
but I can't be arsed to faff about getting kitted up and taking 20 minutes to get my bike out front so once again I'll
miss a lovely day through abject laziness.

Lazy bastard!
Actually, I feel the same way most of the time.
Plus the fact that two weekends a month I work overtime (pays for the fleet car).

Mate I've got more bike kit than is even reasonable to own, literally shitloads. Unfortunately at the moment most
of it is too small due to weight gain, out of the 20 odd jackets I own only one still fits, and that's a waxed cotton affair.
None of the 3 mesh jackets I have will even zip up right now.

I don't even work, I've got literally no excuse.

Went out for a blat with my mate on his KTM SMR 450 (made road legal daytime MOT) today, piece of kit that thing is,
his has been tricked up to beejezus and back too. Quite a sprinter although it doesn't have the legs of my MT10
obviously. Looking forward to a whizz on that and a little bike swap next time round. Went out to a nice pub in the
countryside in Stanton Drew (fun fact I almost bought a fack off great big house with a two storey triple garage
there some years ago) for a few cold ones before parting company mid way home and then having a higher speed
thrash round the A4144 and M32 to scratch my knob-head itch. Managed to squeeze into my Richa mesh jacket which
was refreshingly cool at 100+.

He was super paranoid about leaving it out of sight as it doesn't need a key and he was a bugger to follow due to
having no kind of brake light whatsoever. Found myself rapidly gaining on him a few times. Shocked It did accelerate well
though but ran out of puff at about 85ish but only has 5 gears apparently. I honestly thought there was more
to making a bike road legal than putting a number plate on it which is as far as I can tell the only difference between
his and one someone would use off road or on track. Damn thing doesn't even have a speedo. I predict a few penalty
points before the end of summer for him. Laughing

Did circa 300 miles through some pretty good roads. Tried to stay off the main roads wherever possible as standard of driving is pretty poor (albeit quite relaxed). This meant cutting through the middle of the island, through the forests and over the hilltops / mountains. You just can't beat exploring by bike - in a car you don't get the smell of the forest coming through at you, or appreciate the changes in temperature as you go up and down the mountain, or get the views over the side of the drop away to the sea.

What did I make of the Enfield, I hear you ask? Well, as you'll no doubt appreciate, I really like RE, so I wanted to like it. But.

I didn't. It's dog slow, and I do mean sloooow. Admittedly it was two up all week so it was never going to fly, but honestly it could barely manage 55 most of the time. The gear ratios are awful for the road and with the lack of power, hills needed 2nd, and 3rd/4th were a case of over-revving in 3 and chugging along in 4. 5th hardly got used. The brakes are bang average. Big front wheel - doesn't tip in nicely, and then the knobblies make it all happen and you've almost over-steered it into the bend. Silly things annoyed me, too - sidestand is hopeless, sits the bike bolt upright and if you put it on main stand and forget the sidestand is down, rolling it off the main stand has it go BAAANG into the floor. No not for me thanks.

On the plus side it did ~80mpg even up and down mountains, and it was pretty stable loaded up - navigating the Old Town cobbled streets every day with its tight alleys, tourists, crazy locals on scooters etc, was pretty easy.

Nice to be out on a bike every day for a whole 'working' week rather than just stealing an hour here or there at weekends.

Also nice to have the wife pillion with me the whole time - she rarely comes along these days but I think this has converted her back.

Thumbs Up

Took the KDX for a wander down some lanes and single tracks yesterday in the local area. Given the heat I absolutely did play in a few Fords like a small child.
