You really don't need to empty the tank if you don't ride in winter. You just have to make sure the tank is full of petrol. If you can find E5 then that's better than E10 but even a tank full of E10 is better than a half full tank (or even an empty tank IMO). Water finds it way into the tank through condensation. If there is no air gap above the petrol, there is no condensation. You will hear people claim the ethanol in petrol is hygroscopic. It is (but only mildly), but again, it can't pull water out of non existent air.

Yes to above. Whenever I went away to sea I used to brim the petrol tank of which ever bikes I had at the time. That was pretty well the only thing I did and I was away between 4 and 8 months at a time. I never had any issues.

If the bike is going to be sitting for months, ethanol can be a problem. It will pull moisture out of the air and settle to the bottom of the tank.

It is possible to remove ethanol from fuel. Google it for details, but essentially you pour the fuel into a big container, pour in about 500 ml of water with a drop of food colouring. Shake well, leave it overnight.

Drain off the water. You will be draining off a bit more than you poured in, because what you're draining off is now very dilute ethanol.

I do this for my 250, because it hardly ever gets ridden and I used to have trouble with the bottom of the tank always filling up with water. Not useful if I switched onto reserve and the stuff down there didn't feel like burning. Not a problem for a fuel injected bike in regular use, they seem to keep well stirred.

Thank you all for the help. I put it all back together and it is working perfectly. I had some doubts about the fuel pump as it was a pain in the ass to get out, and the cables and pipes connecting the bike to it as short as fuck. I need smaller hands
