Good overview of what's gone wrong from a builder's perspective:

Many buildings are now given a life expectancy. My children's school built 12 years ago was given a 30 year life. The school it replaced was over 60 years old and had nothing wrong with it except for it wasn't fashionable and didn't have unisex toilets and a prayer room.

Absolutley. One of the schools wifie was in was a Victorian built school and would probably have survived a nuclear attact. It was demolished for one of those paper and tin monstrosities that were popular when grammer schools were shut and big comprehensives were built. It's now an utter rotting mess. But hey, it looked good at the time. Rolling Eyes

So, as the Tories clearly hasn't really built enough schools in the 17 years since Labour were in power, how the fuck did they do anything about temporary classrooms?

Implied I assume is "it'll be so much better when Labour get into power!" but that's obviously not going to happen. From one WEF stooge to another, different shades - literally - of shit.

People dont want schools built on old works full of asbestos or green fields, so none got built

When people realise this along with a shit economy to inherit rather than an okish one from the Major years , whatever Labour do will be either left of Corbyn or nothing at all and everyone will decide it's time to get rid of Westminster

The emperor has returned, and they've purged the Corbynites. It'll be a return to 'new' Labour, so a facade of normalcy and competency that normies will lap up.

The Tories are going to be utterly destroyed which is no less than they deserve. They'll be out of power for at least a decade.

24hr news cycle wont allow for normalcy, Labour will be in the shit as deep as the Tories are within 12 months, begging the EU for a favourable trade deal to drop prices in the shop by £5 a trolley will be dwarfed by the bottomless pit of Net Zero

PFI will be back with a vengeance to pay for all these school repairs

Why not? Being Labour-Lite has worked so well for the Tories Smile Now's not the time to be ambitious: Queer Stammer is just the man to lead this country into obscurity.

Their main mistake was letting the supplier dictate the terms of the contract, which is high level fuckwittery however you look at it. The early PFI setups were a good idea and worked well.

At the end of the day PFI was just slight-of-hand to hide government spending.

It was using resource funding instead of capital funding (i.e. it didn't have to be paid fully at the start and then didn't go on the balance sheet and get depreciated.)

Account rules have changedin the last couple of years and now all long term leases have to be treated as capital expenditure (the full amount of the lease for it's entire term is accounted for at the start and held on the balance sheet.)

Wrong. It didn't disguise any expenditure. What it was supposed to do was to move the risk and initial build costs to the private sector but industy managed to leverage the risk into excessive charges.

Cutting budgets so that committed costs couldn't be afforded didn't help.
