Noob question - what's a normal insurance quote?

I'm a middle aged geezer with many years biking experience but haven't done so in recent years as was working overseas.

I'm curious what do people pay for their bike insurance these days? I pay about £500/year for my car (third party only) which isn't too bad for London. I've got an old Yamaha Diversion 900 - years ago I used to only pay like £100/year for insurance for the Diversion 600 but I doubt it'll be that cheap these days!

There are so many variables at play here, it's a totally pointless question, especially when you can bang your details into Comparethemeerkat and have a precise, tailor-made quote in 5 minutes flat.

Just insured my 2016 Tracer 700 for £370. Mid 40s just passed my test. No no-claims bonus on car or bike. If that gives you any idea.

However, the range of quotes was ridiculous all the way up to £1400.

Cars I pay around £200~£300 fully comp but lately for bikes I've mostly ended up with either new or near new and paying a hundred quid more (fully comp.) For a vintage bike I'd be unhappy to pay three figures... 'tis the season for unhappiness though.

Depends where you are, I pay £76 for my CBF600 with 9 NCB and £112 on the BMW R1200RT with 1 NCB - I am 35 with no accidents etc.

I live in the fields of Lincolnshire though...

I paid more for insurance on the cbr400rr than my cbr900rr. Probably because 400 is grey import, I don't know. Insurance tends to be quite inexpensive when old and live in the middle of nowhere of any note. Edinburgh, 13 miles away, is a nightmare for stolen bikes.

Just have to check the comparison sites. Just make sure to read the small print on those 'cheap' insurance quotes.

iirc i pay about £100 - £150 for a zx9r 3rdPF&T, ditto for a 1150gs

old bikes, safe area = quite cheap premium (I declare 6 points from 4 years ago as well)

On TPFT my XSR700 is about £55 and CRF250 about £60.
The small bike is worth half as much but higher risk it doesn't have immobiliser for a start.
This is rural North Yorks but still an example of unexpected weightings perhaps.
If doing online quotes play with some variables it is not unknown for fully comp to be cheaper as they use a different insurer.
If you have a meaty locking chain they might think ... Hmmm must be risky area and quote more than for none.
Shopping round will almost certainly get lower quotes and could be 50% lower or more.

Isn't it right that insurance has taken a bit of a hike recently? Cars due in January and it's never cheap for some reason.

I do feel for people who have high premiums for no reason other than where they are. I live in the North West, and with zero no claims and a licence held for 20 years (I'm 41) was only 160 quid fully comp on the Sv1000. Car is more than that and it's no sports car!

When I had my bikes garaged in a quiet cul se sac the tiger was £120, the bandit was £70.

Now the tiger lives on a driveway in a semi urban terraced road and it's £230 which is roughly what the bandit was when I parked it in a carpark in a shithole part of town.

But I'm 32 live on the nicer side of Swindon, 3 points for speeding, no crashes or claims and NCB coming out of my arse at a rapid rate.

It varies where you sit in the model for the broker - a human isn't assessing it. Big data is a mammoth concept but if you imagine a risk model being built up of thousands of sliders, where you're placed on them will come from all sorts of sources and be constantly changing.

At the end it spits out a quote having worked out the risk and what they need to charge to make money. Well, insurers make most of their money in investment these days but I digress - it's all a moot point.

You can ask the why but you're asking a huge huge question that does nothing except satisfy curiousity. Your quote is your quote, you can often negotiate but there's a limit.
