I'm mulling over a cat N scoot as a project and wondering if there are any good reasons to avoid this category

Are there any relevant reasons to avoid such a thing?

Resale value?

But it's a scoot so 'meh'..

Yep, too classy for your sort

So, if its a cheap shitter bought cheap and cat N only affects resale value it isn't going to be an issue then is it?

I'm just musing over summat to tinker with but I just checked spares prices and just getting it MOT'd/roadworthy not pretty means it could easily turn into a money pit.

I think I'll pass on it

I thought Cat N was mainly cosmetics.. Confused what does it need to make roadworthy? Second hand parts would be the way to go i'd think.

I was looking at this (not cheap) shitter FJS 600 from the same lot I got the Majesty from but gone off the idea
The majesty looked like it didn't need much to get on the road but
It took quite lot of time to renovate and luckily only moderate dosh.
In its favour, it cost less than feck all cos I swapped it for the Vision I was given and £250 my way.

No so the FJS, that will be a grand plus delivery for starters and I see a good £500 in visible faults and who knows what horrors awaits under the plastics?.
It doesn't look well loved and well serviced machine.
On Ebay currently there are virtually no SH spares for this on offer

The Silverwing is a good machine, but a grand plus delivery plus whatever you'll spend on repairs (as you say, at least £500) for that POS makes no sense when you could have this for two grand obo:

OK mileage, not a write off, plus it's clearly been cared for and had a few £££ spent on it. There are cheaper and still viable ones out there too, but that one looks a really good buy.

Yer not wrong
I could easily end up spending 2 grand or more on that shitter and have nowhere near as good a one as the one you pointed out.

I don't really need a 600 scoot if I'm honest, I just had fantasies of
tearing about legs akimbo like a big ghey hooligan. Laughing

I read the FJS600 are pretty quick but not so economical anyway
and as I'm mostly flitting around the city the 250 is a good compromise
Nippy enough to be fun and not too thirsty.

I bought a Class N BMW GSA a few years back. Just cosmetic and saved about £2k on the bike. I had it as a work horse so knew it wouldn't matter the slight cosmetic issues.

I've now got a new BMW so the old is spare to requirements. 2010 bike on a 57 frame. Just needs a bit of tlc. The cosmetic damage just gives it that used off road look. Has satnav and a front camera bracket.

Cat N just means uneconomical to repair with inflated workshop prices and brand new OEM parts. Second-hand parts and your own spare time might make it a viable project. Parts will be the main obstacle.

Cat 'N' is not a problem!

I bought a 2003 GSX1400 cat 'C' (the same as 'N') back in 2004 with 4.5k miles on the clocks ... now over 103k miles and never had an issue with insurance or anything else.

All the best ... Barry

More of a generic question than about this particular bike, but how do you know for sure it's a cat N. Is it on the V5?

I bought my bike privately and was told it's a cat N, but there's no written proof anywhere - apparently the only damage was cut ignition wires which had since been repaired.

Cat N is a safe bet, my sv1000s was a cat D (Cat N) after I was hit off a roundabout onto wet grass.

Very minor, and I mean minor, grazing on front fairing, side fairing, minor fairing crack around a fixing, snapped fairing mount (rocking horse poop J bracket) and a dented OEM exhaust where the car hit me.

Instant write off. I got paid out and bought it back, cleaned it, replaced the j bracket from eBay (£30 a pair), polished the grazes, 95% of which came out, so barely any visible damage at all. OEM exhausts were £30 a pair on eBay the time. Didn't bother replacing.

So £80 max repair if I had cared about a scratched OEM exhaust....it was written off due to fairing cost and more ridiculously the OEM exhaust cost, circa £800+ from Suzuki at the time...for one....

I think Cat C is now Cat S, Cat D is now Cat N.

However, would a cat N bother me, no, its plastics and maybe a snapped footpeg/lights missing or smashed.

It will put off some buyers, and reduce the value of the bike for ever.

It would put me off. I tend to spanner my bikes more than I ride them, so when I sell a bike it is typically in very good condition, and low miles. The write-off marker instantly reduces the value, regardless of condition. A buyer has no reason to trust my work, and is perfectly valid in their reasoning that if I have the skills to make a bike look good, I also have the skills to hide problems.

If I was going to buy a bike to keep for a good while and put a lot of miles on, a write-off flag is a nice saving. For anything else, it's a liability.

P.
The listing says its a Cat N

Robbys point is interesting as I thought there was
an issue with cat N's even if it is only based on suspicion by some.
It's a fair point in as much as any repairs may not have
been done using best practise but for quick turn around and profit but this applies to any SH bike so buyer beware.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the value of any subsequent insurance claims will be greatly reduced if there's already been a claim against a vehicle.

I think this was changed recently also.

I think you've just got to do your due diligence when looking at a write off, check the bike (or car) out and make your own mind up.

When my sv1000 was written off I took a lot of photos, before and after the damage. My brother has the bike now, but if he were to ever sell it, then the history of what happened is there for any buyer to see.
