Anyone ever been to German Christmas Markets and encountered the Krampus invasion?
(plural .... ?Krampii?)

I'm thinking of going off on a Krampus-chasing trip before Christmas, and not quite sure how to go about it.

I thought about just going to Germany, flying into somewhere direct from London City airport: Berlin or somewhere, enjoying a bit of Christmas market pottering (never been to Germany properly before) and then seeing if the Krampus are as scary as alleged.

The Google machine advises me that usually Krampus come out on the night of 5 December, so I am working out where I should be and when in order to encounter these dastardly critters.

But now I've done a bit of research and have read something about a Krampus outing in the South Tyrol which would require me to fly to Venice and then get a train up through the Dolomites to a little village. I rather like the sound of that!

So what are you expecting? Hordes of drunk young men getting up to hi-jinks so you can take advantage of them?!

Anyone know how much a Krampus costume would cost to rent?

They have a Krampus 'run' here in Whitby so I guess other slightly Bohemian places like Glastonbury or Brighton might do it too.
It's not the same of course but they do take it quite seriously - especially the actual procession.
It isn't something anyone can turn up and join in on the day but you can watch.

Its more about the idea of shopping, eating lebkuchen and being scared shitless by scary monsters. Hi-jinx would always be a bonus, of course.

The thing about Whitby is interesting! I didn't know they did one up there but I guess if its gonna be anywhere, it would be there Cool Thumbs Up

I'm quite taken with the idea of flying to Venice and getting a train up through the mountains to South Tyrol, I have to admit. That part of Italy is beautiful - I passed through the Bolzano region once and it was breathtakingly beautiful, but we didn't have time to stop.

It would probably require me to stay the night in Venice (damn! Laughing ) - a quick flight from London City Airport which is very close to where I live.
So I could do a bit of mooching about in Venice before I got the train north, without having to be there too long. There's a cool bookshop in Venice that I'd like to visit, and a glassblower in Murano who makes chandeliers with little devils on them.

Can't see it being a low-carb trip, admittedly ... Shifty Laughing

Incidentally, there was some footage of immigrants disturbing the festival and gettin' a gud whoopin' by a whole herd of Krampus's's's and they weren't playin' around. The video is probably still out there somewhere.
