Ads are now getting really intrusive on here.

Agreed. I thought I'd lost the submit button but it's now below ads.

I have done this myself.
A relative wanted me to sell an item on Ebay. I don't know anything about the sort of thing they wanted to sell, and they didn't know anything about valuations (or Ebay). I couldn't find a similar item to it, so I just put up my asking price as a Buy It Now. £250 I think it was.

Straight away, a very polite and sincere sounding person contacted me. If he bought it, when could he collect? I said, Sunday morning. That's WONDERFUL, he replied (instantly clicking the Buy It Now). Wasn't everything just hunky-dorey. He can come as early or as late as suited me. What a nice chap.

I looked at his profile and he was an antiques dealer.
Then I did some proper research on the item I was trying to sell. They went for around £900-£1500, and this one was in perfect condition, with serial number, original (1930s) instruction manual, original little box for this and that. So I reneged on the deal, saying there was an error in the listing. I cancelled. Ebay returned his money. He had no recourse to give feedback.

In short, I put the item up for sale in good faith.
The antiques dealer licked his chops.
Ebay took my cancellation request in good faith.

That's 2 out of 3 on good faith. In general, people are all plaise and fank yo and en route to pick up chocs for the kids before a wholesome Sunday dinner, if they think they've got a STEAL. It's every man for himself.

Realised if I go into feedback rather than My Ebay I can neg him Dance! Slightly different situation, he put a low starting amount and it stayed low. I've done that before and sucked it up and still sent the person the item, even though I was making little or no money.

Also had the situation you've described when I've hit BIN on a bike and the persons then backed out. That honestly pissed me off even more, as I get why people do low opening bids as high opening bids/reserves can hurt sale prices.

eBay really pisses me off these days. Very different to what it was when it started... feedback ratings were the bee-all and end-all, both buyers and sellers cared about their ratings and there was little mucking about. Nowadays sellers can't even give buyers negative feedback (WTF not?) and buyers simply don't give a shit.

I am currently trying to flog a cooker - VGC, will be a very good cheap buy for someone. First buyer 'bought' it, but never contacted me again; after chasing them a few times I gave up; cancelled the sale through ebay (in order to recoup my selling fees) and moved on. Relisted - got another buyer; they seemed very happy, we tic-taced a few times to arrange the pick-up time but he just never showed up. Again, went dark. So I got to cancel and relist... again. Such a waste of my time. And of course no blowback on the "buyers" at all; ebay don't care either. Why can't these twats at the very least lose their accounts and get blocked? But no.

I have to agree, ebay is a right pain in the arse. Even worse since it's links with Paypal were severed. I don't sell much but the last time I did ebay kept hold of my money for 2 weeks incase I didn't send the item to the purchaser.

And Bhud, personally I think that's a bit of a cvnts trick. You put the BIN and couldn't be arsed to do any research on the item until the buyer paid for it. Then when you find out you fcuked up you welch on the deal.

Sellers haven't been able to neg' buyers in forever... since 2008 I think Smile If you put it through as a non-payment the buyer should get a strike against them.

Yep, its crap to sell and increasingly crap to buy on there as well now. I've started using Amazon more as you can get a lot of things sent to an Amazon hub counter and avoid postage.

Should. Maybe. Which means precisely zilch now.

The major problem with Amazon is its piss-shit search 'engine'. that and allowing advert listings in teh search - bollox.

Yep. That was why I preferred eBay; all the search tools. Amazon still can't sort things by price properly Rolling Eyes

That kind of plastic used on consumer items that when new has a matt effect making the plastic soft to touch but which deteriorates into a sticky substance over a few years.

They put it on book covers too. Meths and a soft cloth will take it off.

I seem to have surrounded myself yet again with attention-intensive people.

Emotion vampires who drain me of time and energy in the name of being "supportive".

I need to fuck them all off-out-of-it and go back to being a hermit.

I'd make my customary 9 bob bet it's the little gauze sock filter on the inlet pipe. I personally just take them out and throw them in the bin but that does of course risk getting muck into the guts of the thing.

Make sure you know where your PTFE tape is before you start.

Fit a Y strainer with a stop cock upstream of the strainer.

You can isolate and remove the cooncil's clag from the strainer then.

Drivers on a dark, twisty country road who could safely add some useful speed and stop dabbing the brakes all the time if they just use full beam when nothings coming.

As an aside, anyone fitted LED bulbs in replacement of standard halogen on an older car? I fitted some on wifies Megane cabriolet to last longer as it's a right bastard to fit them and I thought they wouldn't need changing so often. They were crap. Had to go back to H7's as you couldn't see bugger all. Any good ones on the market?
