I was off with the local TRA group yesterday. I'd always understood that if you used tyre mousses for any significant road distance, they would fail but all the other bikes on the ride were running them and said they never had a problem. We covered easily 100 miles about 50:50 road to offroad.

Got me thinking about fitting them to my Bullet trials bike, it would save worrying about flats and save me carrying a spare tube, tyre levers, pump and pressure guage. My top speed is about 40mph and there's maybe 12-14bhp and the bike is about 120-140kg so it's not going to overwhelm the things. I've got a couple of questions.

Do they have an equivalance to a particular tyre pressure? I'm running at about 6psi for most offroad work with a 275 x 21 front and either a 400 x 19 or 400 x 18 rear.

Cann you still keep the rim locks in, I'm concerned the tyre could still dismount without them.

How much of a bastard are they to fit and how do you get the bead to seat onto the rim once they're in?

Mousses are all very well for those with a lot of money, but A) They are not road legal B) They are not easy to fit C) They need regular lubrication D) They are heavier than an inner tube.

Visitors riding around wales are often stopped by plod who know the signs of tyres that are fitted with mousses and fine those who are encountered.

A good friend with many years of experience has a mousses fitted to the front wheel of his bike but an inner tube in the back,so that he can adjust the pressure according to the conditions.A mousse runs the equivelant to about 12-13psi.

I have extra heavy duty inner tubes fitted to my bike, together with rim locks/security bolts and find that the adjustability is ideal for where I ride.

Ah well then. Not enough splat at that kind of pressure, I'd be sat spinning the wheels in the mud a lot. That alone makes it a no-go.

Thanks.

Interesting about the Nitromousse option, but I would not want to use the softer version for hard enduro at that equivelant pressure.

As stated, other options are available. The other ones that I have heard of are made by Bridgestone and Michelin. Both of their websites state around 0.9 bar or 12-13psi.
