Passed my mod 1 this morning.

Got to the test centre, stuck my L plates on the bike, took restrictor off which is 1 Allen key bolt for fairing and and then two Phillips screws for throttle restrictor, and donned the high vis (don't forget this of doing it yourself!) . Chap didn't want to see any insurnace documentation so long as I was happy to tick the I'm insured box (I'd taken my insurance cert and letter to say I was insured with me just in case).

Got my mod 2 tomorrow they must have had some cancellations.

It surprised me a little that they didn't check further. I'm glad you and others have commented on the thread as it's made me question what I thought I knew and then look further into what you have all been saying.

I know some people ride without the restriction and don't have the correct insurnace in place but for me it's not worth it. Hopefully tomorrow the restrictor comes off for good.

Genuinely, I am shocked because when I was at the MOD 1 test centre in Glasgow they were checking documents. Even checked school bikes and went through the process. Out of curiosity what centre did you use?

Us Scots, being complete bastards, probably means we check stuff more for no other reason than being complete bastards.

Congratulations. 1 of my minors was for lack of hesitation I guess. I went at a junction when he thought there wasn't enough time. He wasn't at the junction by this time so had a blocked view (built up area).

My other was for accelerating a touch early at a 30-50mph change. Clocked me doing 34 past the sign. Fairy nuff on that one.

A little guide to upgrading from an A2 licence to an A licence on your own bike. Obviously I am not an instructor, so please do your own research on top of this and take lessons if necessary.

1. Ring your insurance and tell them you want to undertake your test on your own bike. Some insurers offer it as standard for the first x days, I'm with Hastings Premier and whilst it was covered it was not in my policy documentation. They simply sent me a letter after I requested it that I took to the DVSA with my insurance certificate in case they wanted to check it.

2. Make sure you can restrict/de-restrict your bike. You have to legally get your bike to and from the test centre, but also do your test on a derestricted bike. Mine was a physical throttle restriction that took 2 minutes to take off. See the here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/list-of-motorcycles-that-can-be-used-for-riding-tests to check if your bike is eligible to undertake the test but as a rough guide it needs to be at least 595cc and 40KW/54HP.

3. What you'll need: A high visibility vest to wear during both MOD 1 and MOD 2 tests and L plates. Make sure if your rear L plate is covering your reflector to make sure your reflector is somehow visible. One of the mod 2 show me/tell me questions requires you to show the lights/reflectors and it's a legal requirement to have one showing. I simply mounted my reflector on the L plate whilst it was on the bike.

4. Get on a car park and practice your slow speed manoeuvres.
