Yes, completely serious.
Using too much isn't really a problem except that it takes longer to set up and you might get a dusty sticky mess all around it (it does wipe off quite easily while wet though). "higher quality" hairspray sets faster, I'm tight so use tesco own brand and wait 24 hours for it to set.
I use it whenever I install grips - even on foam ones it works. It holds grips on bmx and trials bikes with no issues except when it comes time to get them off, may need to cut them off - but the hairspray residue is way easier to clean up than any glue product. Oh, and once set rain etc doesn't bother it ime.
Spray it in, slip the grips on, position, leave overnight.
Get the nicely scented stuff if you can - no practical reason, it just smells nicer.
Edit to add:
First time I tried it I sprayed it in and put the grip on, then left it for about 2 hours - when I grabbed it the grip was sliding and twisting all over the place and I thought "those bastards got me good, arse, bugger it, I'll clean it off tomorrow and try something else".
Tomorrow came and the grip was well and truly stuck.... ____________________ Any and all advice given should not be followed - if you have to ask it means you don't know so get a man in to do it for you. |

Superglue is the 'proper' stuff - that's what the manufacturers supply when you buy them new. But you have to be really, really quick when you apply it - you only have a couple of seconds before it goes off - and if you haven't practised and done at least one dry run, you'll end up with the grips protruding a centimetre over the end of the bars, and stuck completely rigid..
Or so I'm told ____________________ KC100->CB100N->CB250RS--------->DL650AL2->R1200RS->R1250RS |
