Probably one for the Geek section but in the interests of pushing on the forum's "no posts" fault with long threads...

I spend most of my working day typing and I already have what I thought was a reasonable Corsair mechanical keyboard. Turns out the keycaps are only "OEM profile" which the purists sneer at and the switches are bog-standard "Cherry MX Red" linears which are only meant for gamers. So in the interests of buying a new toy ergonomic efficiency I've fallen down the rabbit hole of mechanical keyboards...

I've purposely bought a middle-of-the-road gaming keyboard just to strip it down and throw away the switches and keycaps. Why? Because "barebones" PCB keyboards are more expensive Rolling Eyes Yes, you could also buy a pre-built "premium" custom keyboard full of clicky Cherry MX Blues but what if you don't like them? Enter stage left:

CHERRY MX EXPERIENCE BOX

Surely the direst of First World Problems™ is having to choose between 10 (ten!) styles of key switch that click (or not) in subtle and different ways. "Autism in the 21st Century is getting out of hand" I hear you say but these are just wot Cherry offer. Dial it up to 11 and you can choose between Glorious Pandas, Gateron Oil Kings or Silent Alpachas Shocked Almost as many switches as there are genders!

Then there's keycap sets. I'm currently on the hunt for a Double Shot, SA Profile, ISO-layout, UK set... in PBT plastic. (Shamefully I've only found ABS so far.)

"So when you've got all that you can make a keyboard?"

Noooooo! Then one begins the delicate process of stripping down and rebuilding with anti-flex reinforcement, correct weighting and sound deadening foam...

I have two of these, one with brown switches and one with red - they are a delight to clatter on.

The reviews of this keyboard were pretty accurate: nice solid base (literally, it has the heft of a deadly weapon) but the knock-off blue switches are rubbish. Somehow clicky and mushy at the same time; they jam up occasionally and have a fair amount of wobble. The former will get better with time but the latter can only get worse. Even so they're still way better than typing on the Cherry reds.

But as I'm aiming to junk the switches anyway I can get creative. All the alphanumerics will be Gateron blues (clicky), modifier keys - yellows (light touch linears), enter, space, backspace & delete - blacks (heavy linears) and everything else browns (middleweight tactiles).

I've had to make do with ABS keycaps. They're not RGB shine through (not that I look at the keyboard while typing anyway) but they are SA Profile - slightly reminiscent of the keys on my old Commodore 64 and almost identical to the electromechanically typewriters I first learnt to type on Smile

2 x pieces of polenta and orange cake
A small(ish) sweet potato and feta quiche
A split croissant with spinach, melted cheese and an egg (better than it sounds)

Took it for lunch at Maggie's, but she turned up her nose at the eggy croissant so I brought it back home and left the polenta cake and quiche with her and her daughter. Wub

A house. With a big garden and a BIG new workshop.

So if you've visited me at home before and thinking of popping by - don't, I'm not there!

I had a feeling you were going to expand the workshop. Didn't expect you to swap houses to do so.

How long until the new workshop is full of machines?

A vintage Kayes ‘pie crust’ light oil dispenser for £5 from Stratford-Upon-Avon autojumble. It reminds me of Dad and Grandad who seemed mad on oiling stuff but I reckon they were influenced by the steam age. I guess in those days lubrication would be quickly washed away by hot water and steam. Dad was a fireman on the Great Western, he’d have liked to have been a driver but he had a degree of colour blindness. Anyway, it’s an attractive thing I can use.

I bought Railroad Tycoon 2 Platinum (1998) video game for €1.29 (it's like 74% off). Now, I vaguely remember playing this game as a child sometime around the year 2000, enjoying it and all that. Playing it today, I forgot how to play the game and also, I forgot how challenging these games were on higher difficulties. But still, the gameplay is so engaging, that I replayed the first mission 10 times before I figured out how to play it and then 5 more times before I could finish the first mission on at least the bronze trophy. I opt for the highest difficulty to ''enjoy'' the game. Razz

It's so annoying when something small like an o-ring goes missing—those little parts can really mess things up. My latest purchase was actually a set of gardening tools. Been trying to spruce up my backyard, you know?

I got a wireless Red Dragon keyboard and I've replaced every switch with Cherry MX reds and I love this combo now. I've also replaced the key caps with a set of Genshin Impact themed ones.

Fucking love my keyboard. Laughing
