Good afternoon all,

Didn't think I'd be in this section so soon but I've recently purchased a 2013 Triumph Tiger 1050. 14k on the clock with full Triumph service history.

The video attached demonstrates the noise I'm getting between certain rev ranges.

Only does it under load so no noise when on centre stand going through the gears. Gets louder as you go up hill.

Any ideas please would be much appreciated. I'm also on the Tiger forum with the same questions.

Cheers

Gaz

Not sporty enough so now on my GSXR 1000 K3 and absolutely love it. 1 year down the line, nearly died way too many times on this bike. Sold it. Had a 6 month break. Missed biking so now, Aug 2019 have a 1999 ZX9r. What a beauty she is too.

Before any sort of exploratory disassembly, I would check all the motor mounts to make sure they are secure. Hopefully the condition can be corrected easily.

Because the noise happens only under load and gets louder with increased load, I think the sound is likely emanating from the lower end. Specifically, the symptoms suggest one of the connecting rod bearings is loose.

Exhaust leak at the headers IMO. check the exhaust all over for cracks or sooty marks especially where it bolts up.

Plus it sounds like your chain is fecked.

Thanks guys. I'm off next week so I'm going to go over the bike with a fine tooth combe and check every visably fixing, nut and bolt I can.

I'll also check the exhaust system for leaks.

Jeff, I don't like the Rod bearing diagnosis. That sounds expensive. The bike only has 14k on it so I would have thought that kind of wear would be less likely but in reality I have to take it on board and hope for the best.

I will also check the chain condition this weekend. On the surface it looks ok but it's not shiny and new looking by any means.

Why would this only happen in a small range of the revs and not all the time?

I was thinking more sort of camchain tensioner or similar.

From what I observed in the video, it is happening all the time. OP asked for ideas and I gave him two. My direct experience is limited to engines much larger than the Tiger 1050. Rod knock on a 12 L. engine that peaks at 2100 rpm is pronounced and at a lower frequency. You might hear it at idle/light load in very severe cases. The condition starts small and intensifies over time; the noise increases with load. It is just a guess and I hope I'm wrong. If the bike were mine, like the OP, I would be concerned. Unless the noise is external, like a motor mount or a loose part, exploratory disassembly will be necessary.

Indeed - valvetrain was on my mind also. Perhaps the 'screwdriver stethoscope' could help pin-point.

Thanks for you're responses. Really do appreciate you're input.

I think the cheap microphone doesn't do any favours for the engine sound. In between the loud ticking the bike actually sounds great.

Like I say the ticking isn't always there... Just between certain rev ranges. Once it get past those ranges the noise completely goes.

I've taken advantage of the warranty now and they've collected the bike this morning. They'll take it back to their workshop and hopefully diagnose and fix it.

I'll let you know.

Do this is the reply from Superbike Factory. Am I overreacting?

The technicians have looked over the bike and have come back to me with the following report. ''engine sounded spot on, slight noise from the top end when ridden but in line with the characteristics of this engine and not noticeably different from any other example. There was a noise from the exhaust that could be mistaken for an engine rattle but again it's a characteristic of the exhaust.''

Sounds like flim-flam.. The motrors are common enough as far as I know.. can you compare yours with another locally. I guess there must be Triumph specific forum too.

So update here.

Superbike Factory technicians have looked at the bike and reported that the engine is spot on. There is a slight noise from the top end which isn't server enough to be anything other than characteristics of the bike. The exhaust sound, also a characteristic of the bike can make a sound that could be mistaken for something else.

This is the answer I was hoping not to receive. The slight noise from the top end is so loud it turns heads from the general public.

I went back to SBF and basically told them I could never enjoy any bike that made a noise like this.

They've come back with options ... Either take the bike as it is with trusting the knowledge of their technician's ... Give the bike back, refund issued, walk away or ... Pick another bike.

Despite early doubts of how this was going to conclude I'm actually very pleased with how this has gone. Needles to say I've picked another bike and its currently going through their process before delivery.

It is another Tiger 1050 sport. A year younger and a couple of k less on the clock. Apart from the noise on the previous Tiger the ride was spot on and it's exactly what I'm looking for.

Cheers all

I've always preferred to buy my bikes from somewhere I can take it back if it has issues.

If I'd have bought the last Tiger private it would have been sold as seen and I'd be stuck with it.

If this next bike isn't satisfactory it will be going back.

I've had a few bikes from these guys when they were RiteBike and they've been OK. Sometimes they need a shuv to get them working on aftersales but I get there in the end.

If I had bought the bike privately I would have insisted on at least listening to the engine before I handed over any cash....

Ah. SBF.

You realise they'll just swap the plates and give you your old bike back?

They'll probably charge you an admin fee for that, too.

Ermm.. so if the new Tiger sounds OK - how did they explain/justify the difference? Confused

So.. Tried another Tiger from different place. Made the same sound but a lot quieter.

Swapped my red Tiger for a nice 2014 White one with only 13k on the clock and full luggage.

Sounds exactly the same as the second one I tried. Clicking between 3-4k though this one gets considerably quieter when warmed up.

Bike runs and rides perfect. Absolutely love this triple power output. No disappointment in any of the gears.

Superbike Factory aftersales was put to the test and they came through. The delivered my bike to my house free of charge nearly a month ago and I've enjoyed it since.

I think these engines are a bit agricultural my nature sound a bit noisy. Coming from a smooth IL4 has amplified this for me I think. I now just ignore it and ride the bldy thing.

Cheers All
