Yes, that's right, part 3 of the ongoing saga that is my baptism of biker hell. I have a Honda XR125L, and after about 8 miles of journey this morning in the rain I was just moving off from standing, about 5 mph, on the Old Kent Road when my bike cut out. It just completely died. The gear selector stopped responding, not up or down, so it's stuck in 1st. So consequently I couldn't start it up. I had to literally drag the bike accross the road with it stuck in gear, accross 2 lanes of traffic, it's always fun having a bendy bus bearing down on you while you try your hardest to drag a dead weight in the rain.

Safely at the side of the road, it decided to come out of 1st and so I was able to wheel it into a side road. I pulled the choke out, started it up and gave it some throttle, it just coughed and spluttered. I let it run idle for a few mins, stuck it into 1st and it cut out instantly. I went through this pattern 3 times and everytime it cut out when in 1st.

50 mins later and the AA turn up and take it off to Honda in Swanley. Unsurprisingly it ran fine for them. They've since called and said oh yeah the choke was out when we got it maybe that's why it cut out. grrr Mad I told them in no uncertain terms that that was not the case. The choke was only out because we tested it when the AA turned up. ANyway they said they'll ride around on it and see what happens.

What the hell is wrong with my bike?
Is bike ownership always this stressful?
How stupid do you feel on public transport in full bike gear?

Sad

Yo Randomspam -tell me about the details of your bike, age, mileage etc - cos i got an XR too. My mate in scotland said that there was a recall on certain models to rectify the electrics on it and maybe HONDA definately should have sent you a letter? - I believe he's logged onto here as Ghost rider, Nik.

My XR's willing to start in every case but it DID CUT out once when in 2nd gear - i thought it was a side stand issue but seeing that the connection and linkage is clean. PLEASE PLEASE tell me (PM me) about the outcome of the guys fixing it Thumbs Up.

Had my bike since august last year, ridden it hard, thrashed it to the maximum capabilities, been two up on it etc. Seen every day of rain in winter (although it's frequently washed and sprayed with WD40 and fluids checked). So far 2500 miles. Is your situation similar?

Anyway, hope the XR gets better.

Hi Titz, this sounds very intriguing if it's true. Mine is an XR125L, It was new last year, it's done 5500 miles. I'm the 2nd owner and only in the last 2 months so I doubt Honda would contact me about this recall. If you or Ghost Rider have any more info about this I'd be really interested so I can tell Honda in Kent about it tomorrow.

Cheers

All the best

on some bikes there is a switch that indicates when the sidestand is down, so if you put it in first with the sidestand down it will cut out, so for safety reasons you don't ride off with it down, i am guessing that is what kickstart means. if you have one there will be a little black box around the stand, this will be the switch. the switch icould be knackered, take it off and give it a good clean, especially the contacts.
Hope it helps

In that case, honda will rectify the problem. I always made sure i cleaned every link with WD 40, unblock breather pipes because sometimes they might be full of stagnant water. For the side stand issue, i just made sure the cable was connected properly. I removed it and brushed down the contacts and replaced. I guess maintenance is the key here, especially in winter where salt oxidises metallic parts causing short circuits etc. Wink Keep it in tip top condition and it'll be fine. I think Ghost Rider's problem was due to the CDI or something when he mentioned it to me. Both of us ride XR125Ls too, mine being an 04 model.

Could also be water in the fuel which would make it cut out, refuse to start for a bit then fire up and run fine after some time when the water has sunk to the bottom of the float bowl.

The sidestand idiot switch is a prime suspect as has been said.

Hi i had a crash late 2005 and the insureance company give me a cover bike anyway two weeks or so after having it the company ringed me
telling me they was a recall on them due to a faulty ignition coil.
If the coil does go it can led to problems similar said like above

Sorry to hear about your bike mate, but i would get it in somewhere before listening to some so called experts - esp the guy who has owned half the bikes on the planet but doesn't know a 2 stroke from a 4 stroke.
Besides whats wrong with 2 strokes ? never had a decent one i can only sumise Rolling Eyes

Seriously get it in somewhere for a check up before it lets you down just when you really dont need it to

This problem sounds a bit similiar to the problems im having with my Honday CG125...

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=73517

Mine cut out on the way back form work, couldnt select first gear. After 5 minutes of pushing the bike i was able to start her back up, then down the road she cut out again, couldnt select first, wouldnt start.

So i start pushing again untill im able to find a postcode in order for the rescue to pick me up...get her home and she starts up...

After reading the feedback recieved from BCF members i emptied my tank today and re-filled her with fresh petrol, she started second kick Laughing , normally takes bout 8-10. I havent take her for a long run yet, plan on going out local early Sat.

This centre cut out switch does this also apply to CG's, i wouldnt think so cos im able to start her while on the stand, but mine is extremly stiff at mo (have to manually reach down and pull it up while on bike)...Anyway good luck with the garage and if you manage to work out the root of your problems could you let me know as it might help me in fixing mine...Ow

Getting it into gear from neutral could be where you're pushing the cog down and rather than nicking in between two other teeth it hits the top of another one. My old bike was terrible for it, roll forwards (or backwards) while pushing the lever down and it should go in fine Wink
