I bought a camera lens. The Fujinon XF 30 mm f/2.8 macro. I got a 10% off deal, so I said why not.

This lens is quite interesting, I've never had one like this before. The lens has internal linear focus motor and can focus on anything from less than 1cm away from the front element to infinity and unlike the Fujinon's previous pocketable macro lens (the XF 60 mm f/2.4) this new one's autofocus is incredibly fast and accurate.

Today, I went out to test the new lens... I don't usually do macrophotography, so I have no idea what I'm doing. It was also very windy.

3 second pop up tent, Well it takes me 10 seconds to put the tent up, after a bit of practice, and another 30 inserting the pegs. The zips are not really good quality. The tent looks so so but haven't tried it for real.

It'll come in handy when I eventually go camping in 2030.

Buying things when drunk is not good.

Was considering one of those 'lift-up-the-middle" types but settled on a standard 3 man tunnel tent. Used it twice so far in the dry. Not sure i'd chance it in heavy rain.

A kevlar base-layer top. Bit heavy duty and warm for mid-summer but good for rest of the year. My textile jacket feels very thin - not sure it has any slide resistance whatsoever.

A couple of monitors for the new pc.
Hopefully decent, no idea - way too much choice.

I have an Iiyama. A perfectly adequate if unremarkable brand.

A tiny remote control car with a feather hanging off its "aerial" for the cat to chase around the room. At ~£6 I wasn't expecting an autonomous mode that can navigate obstacles!

I bought i7 7700K for £115 and I must say, wow!

Initially, I was going to replace the whole computer, as I've built it back in 2015 with i5 6600 (b150 chipset board) and although it's a nice 65W TDP chip, the majority of recently released games, and even some vintage games that only use single core, do not really run that well.

So, I did my homework, checking the latest HW on the market (#intel's in trouble again), ... even checking how modern games should run on my 1070Ti, to see if I needed a brand new GFX card as well, and there I've noticed some people paired this card with the i7 6700K and i7 7700K and the games did seem to run well enough. So, after two beers I went online and bought the i7 7700K from my local used parts vendor.

Now, performance boost? Well, YES! The internet people say the effective speed difference between the i5 6600 and i7 7700K is 25% but for me, it's like double the performance, as recently 30fps (locked for consistency) games now run at full 60fps without stutter and that's not all. The ''K'' chip also supports XMP profiles for the RAM, so my DDR4 memory now runs about 300MHz faster.

The only downside so far is the heat and probably the power consumption. Intel says the i7 7700K should be a 91W TDP chip, well my 130W TDP CPU cooler in a very generously vented case would disagree. That being said, unless I do a CPU heavy test, just to see what the i7 can do, it's really a non issue. In gaming the temperature hovers around 70°C (28-30°C ambient) and the CPU does boost up to 4.4 GHz and even to 4.5 GHz. The i5 6600 would sit at 50°C in this kind of weather.

NOTE: If you've got a Skylake motherboard and want to fit a Kabylake CPU, you need the latest BIOS update before you do so, otherwise the CPU would not work.

Funny thing is, back in the days of Intel Pentiums vs AMD Phenoms, the Intel boys coping mechanism was making fun of how hot AMD chips ran. Now Intel gets smashed on processing performance as well as chip temperatures by AMD Laughing Laughing Laughing

That 7700K is now 7 generations out of date but Intel was using their 14nm lithography all the way up to the 11th generation of CPUs (Rocket Lake). Your 7700K is pretty much the same as the 11700K Laughing

I'm pretty sure Phenoms are better than Pentiums - even with MMX! Cool Razz

A jar of pineapple jam, amazing dotted on porridge.

Am anxious to buy some almond croissants so that I can see how it pans out on those (fantasy food league) but its so yummy that at this rate I will finish the jar before I get round to the croissants, simply by eating the damn stuff off a spoon.

They certainly overclocked better. The black version iirc.

Fuel pipe for the TVR, after a year long resto I decided not to replace one pipe as it was new a year ago, wish I had, awful to change, split in it, and its too short to cut it and still attach to fuel rail properly.

I bought a more capable CPU cooler for my recently purchased i7 7700K.

At first, I thought I was going to be alright with a bit of noise, but I can't bear it any more. Synthetic benchmarks (exceeding 95°C at 100% fan speed) aside, even during medium to high CPU demanding gaming the case fans and the CPU cooler fan have to run at 100% speed to keep the chip around 90°C (20°C ambient)... so my old budget friendly cooler found its limit, and I'm going to replace it with Noctua NH-D15S which should be more than enough for the i7 7700K.

#quietcomputing Thumbs Up

EDIT/UPDATE: Today mounted the new cooler, and I'm amazed how effective it is. Sure it's twice as big as my previous one, 3 times heavier too, and sure it also has 6 times more heat pipes and a 140x140mm fan, but still. My computer is quiet again, and the max temps dropped by 20°C on average, not exceeding 70°C during full load.

I bought 7.5 litres of Dulux Weathershield ( magnolia) for the garden walls.

I live such an exciting lifestyle.

I am sure if my 18 year old self was observing me from the past, opening the lid this evening, through a crystal ball, he would not be able to wait till he was me...

Such excitement, every day is a fun day...

The first time I went to Australia, my sister advised me that they had crumpet LOAF. Wub
Like ... a whole loaf of slices made out of [square] crumpet. Shocked

I thought I had died and gone to crumpet heaven, and made plans to have her send me some on a regular basis Laughing ... but apparently shortly after I left to come back to Blighty, they discontinued it Crying or Very sad

Meanwhile, today I have mostly bought:
Two bottles of ridiculously expensive amber-scented room spray;

Based on the fact that I like the hand cream in the same brand.

I had blind-bought a bottle of their "wild fig" flavoured room scenter a month or so ago, and it wasn't as nice in my living room/office as I had hoped - cloying rather than restful, so I relegated it to the dunny this week where (unsurprisingly) it works quite well.

I also bought some little gold jingly bells that blow in the breeze and make an annoying tinkling noise to irritate my neighbours. Mr. Green Thumbs Up

A Samsung S24+.
Since my old phone is no longer receiving operating system updates I thought I'd 'upgrade'.
It's not really a justifiable outlay if I'm honest, not a massive leap in terms of technology etc but at least I should be able to keep up with the OS.
