Ah well, they now do A+++ ones which use half as much power again as this one.

Care to share your research? I know nothing about these machines but apparently I'm in the market for one here too...

They rate them according to an arbitrary number of cycles per year from A to D. Then people started exceeding class A so they started adding pluses. It's a bit of an odd one to compare, you need to compare like with like so taking an 8kg hotpoint for an example.

Vented, Class C: Costs £289. Uses 585kW/h/year.

Condenser, Class B: Costs £377. Uses 560kWh/year

They don't seen to do an A

Heat pump, class A+: Costs £379. Uses 309kWh/year.

Heat pump Class A++: Costs £399. Uses 234kWh/year

Heat pump class A+++: Costs £469. Uses 175kWh/year.

So you save £180 on the purchase price if you get a class C drier instead of a class A+++.

However it uses 410kW/h more power for the standardised annual useage. 234% more power consumption. At the current 22.36p per kWh, that's £91.68 more electricity a year. So if it lasts five years, it paid for itself totally in the energy saved over using a cheap, inefficient one.

I do a lot of washing. Two vets in the household. I get really filthy at work and even if I'm doing clean work, I still need to wear clean clothing each day for infection prevention so we're probably averaging 1.5 sets of clothes a day each and my garden is North facing so shit for drying. Maximum energy efficiency is important.

Yes, there are more efficient ways of drying washing. An airing room with a dehumidifier is next best to hanging them on a line. But I'm using a dryer and if I'm using one, the maths dictates a more expensive but highly efficient one is a no-brainer.

I suppose if you were doing one load a week, a cheapo vented drier might make more sense.

TL;DR. A class C vented dryer is £180 cheaper than an A+++ heat pump one but uses 2.3 times more electricity which with average use will cost £92 a year more.

For what it's worth, I just ordered a Sharp KD-NHB8S6GW3, Which at £389 seemed a good buy. No real brand loyalty here. Last one was a Beko (a budget brand really, made in Turkey) which lasted for 12 years of heavy use.

Yeah we have a 60 quid dehumidifier in the room we hang washing in. I originally bought it to run in my old convertible once a week over the winter months.

1. No more mould / damp.
2. Stuff is bone dry in a few hours - all of it, not just one load.
3. No smells.
4. Cheap to run - like a fraction of the cost of a drier.

We still use the TD for towels and heavy stuff but everything else is either on the line in the dry in the summer or dried as above.

Worth noting that an "old skool" vented drier will do much better in terms of energy efficiency if you buy a "sensor dry" model and you live in a fairly dry climate. (My mum's noticed her washing out on the line dries in no time up here compared to taking all day down in Cornwall.)

If you're looking into long term costs, also factor in that vented driers have fuck all in them: motor, belt, drum, heating element, controls... very, very easy to repair yourself. My last vented drier I replaced the belt 3 or 4 times and the drum bearings once during its lifetime. Not paying an engineer to work on it is a big saving.

As it turns out, the heat pump ones are very simple. The only complex bit is the HVAC system which is the expensive bit but they don't tend to go wrong unless it leaks the refrigerant. It's effectively a fridge/small AC unit. When it does let go, it's effectively game over though. That bit is totally seperate to the rest of it which is just a motor and a drum with a couple of fans attached and a lift pump to drain the water.

Arguably, it's less likely to go wrong than a vented one because there's no heating element and the internals aren't being constantly baked. The two usual failures are fluff blockages in the condenser plates due to a damaged or neglected filter or the drain pump letting go (which costs £25). Belts too but as above, they aren't being baked so they tend not to fail so readily.

Fluff is the bane of all tumble driers. A gentle reminder to regularly clean out your lint filter.

Got a notice of intended prosecution for speeding Mad Never had as much as fine before and now I'm caught for doing 28 in a 20 because it's fucking Wales where everything is now 20 and I had to drive down a road I'd never been on before because of roadworks that's been going on for 10 years.

If only there was some obvious way of knowing what the speed limit was on any given road. I know, why don't you suggest that some sort of sign should be put up whenever you go from one speed limit to another.

To be honest I have no time for people who get done when their explaination is that they didn't know what the speed limit was.

I've been done multiple times and Ive known what the speed limit on that road was every time. Im just prepared to admit that I'd chosen to ignore it.

Last time i got done I had to go up in front of the beak to be banned. Literally everyone else was there for speeding and whined about how it wasnt their fault. I admitted I was in the wrong and had no justification for what Id done and got 6 points instead.

If you are so oblivious of quite plain and easy to understand things like speed limit signs you shouldnt be on the road.

I'm sure there has been a brief mention of the Welsh 20mph speed limits in the media... maybe I imagined it Thinking

I think the only ticket I was really aggrieved with was a stretch of dual carriageway - no buildings about, no chance of pedestrians - and it was somehow 30mph. Somewhere up north I'll never venture to again thankfully.

And Lambeth bus lane tickets. Lambeth council are Satan's little helpers Sad
