At what latitude does “Garradge” become “Garidge”? (Or am I being too simplistic?)

North Oxfordshire: garidge.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "Garr-arge" unless they were trying to affect a formal aspect for the purposes of extracting the urine.

It's always been "Garridge" wherever I've lived - Bucks, Cardiff, Surrey, Bristol, Gloucester.

Fun fact I was considering joining UKIP when I have arrived in the UK and actually have spoken with the "Farage" Laughing

He is nice guy even though I now disagree with all he say.

I will start calling my garage Faradge now because I never clean it and its a dirty place and is located in Bavaria Germany Laughing

And because you expect to have more Faradges in 2029 (or sooner).

I call my garage ''Gargl''.

EDIT: Just used the Google translator and found an English word ''gargle'' that if read fast with hard R sound sounds exactly the way I call my garage. Very Happy

It's not a real word in Czech language. I made it up years ago and only a few people know what it means. It's a combination of the Czech word ''garáž'' (French pronunciation of the word ''garage'' is very close to the way it sounds) and local accent/dialect (Moravian-Silesian region).

In Moravian-Silesian region we tend to speak fast/short and don't waste time with long sounds in words, but at the same time it's the cleanest and most literary correct way of speaking Czech. In other parts of the country the spoken language is way off the written/correct form.

Here's a question for the Brits here, what British dialect/accent is the closest to the ''correct'' English in spoken form? Thinking

I speak like a pirate.

(The 'Arrr, Jim lad' bit was originally done by a somerset actor and now the accent is now associated with pirates.)

In Britain you can travel 20 miles and hear a different accent (and incidentally, see a different landscape only a little further afield), so the answer to your question would be dependant on the respondent’s origin. Personally I suspect the Oxfordshire accent of Gerald from Apple TV’s ‘Clarkson’s Farm’ is broadly representative of much of the old South, and a bit “Ooo Arrr!” similar to what Nobby said. These days the dominant accent might be ‘Estuary English’. Shame.

Tricky one to answer.
Many may say Received pronunciation (RP) as is spoken by say BBC news presenters, Royalty and most politicians is 'proper' English as it's generally more formal.
It is in one sense more 'correct' English, as it does tend to use use the correct forms and terms instead of slang, colloquialisms, diminutives etc.

Last time I looked his birth town of Shaftesbury was still in Dorset but he spent most of his childhood in Kernow and Debm, so of the four proper Westcountry counties that you could have picked Wurzel country wasn't one of them. Laughing

As for the 'Proper' English accent, I challenge any of you to beat my mother's Surrey accent when she requests that one should go fuck off. Laughing

Garage (rhyming with Farage) is a dirty word of French origin and no self respecting Englishman would pronounce it that way.

North east Scotland, around Inverness way. True story. Never mind just google it and it's apparently the home counties.

I wish I could speak Scots Gaelic. It's only ever really spoken these days up the Northwest and some islands.

I’d call it Beryl if I had one. Then I could stick it in Beryl whenever I wanted.

You have to fill it with spiders so the wives do not want to enter or store their precious items in. Cool
