I'm due a new company van soon and as it's new, it will most likely have a mandatory speed limiter fitted as well as lane departure warning.

In fairness, I rarely speed in it anyway but I have an almost pathological aversion to computers trying to tell me what to do, especially if it's in the form of intrusive audiable signals. To the extent i've totally stopped using self-checkouts because I get irrationally angry wih them unless they have a mute button (which most don't).

I know they can be turned off every time you start the vehicle but I'm looking for a simple workaround so i don't have to. I can usually break the equally annoying stop-start function within the first week by repeatedly fucking with it until it packs in. Thing is I have no idea how the speed limiters actually work.

Seems to me that the simplest thing will be to prevent it knowing what the speed limit is but how do they do this? Will it be a GPS system? Or do they optically read speed limit signs? If it's the latter, simple gaffa tape will suffice, which is how I'll tackle the lane departure warning.

If it's the former, I'm wondering if I'll be able to mess with the GPS settings so it's looking for the wrong signal? (I never use GPS for navigation anyway) Or possibly disconnect the GPS receiver? Or grasping at straws, isolate the GPS receiver in a mesh faraday cage?

I wont be able to get any chips reflashed because it's not my vehicle so anything I do would need to be reversable.

Depends on the manufacturer but cameras are the simplest system. You might want to print yourself a "national speed limit" (circle & black diagonal) show it to the car and then tape over the lens. What a delicious combination of subversion and absurdity Laughing As for GPS you'd need a parts diagram to know where it is and where the nearest connector is.

Ultimately the feature can be switched off in the ECU as no one in markets outside the EU would want such interference. Given the UK is no longer in the EU and no one at the Dept for Transport fancied implementing such a mandate just ahead of the election you'd be well within your rights to ask the dealer to permanently switch the intelligent speed assist off.

Wrap the van with enough aluminium foil to create a faraday cage?

GPS jammer might also work.

Things like this exist. https://byteflash.co.uk/speed-limiter-removal.shtml

I'd take a guess that at least half of the systems being built will have a failsafe that restricts you to 30mph in the event of a sensor failure. It's possible ALL the systems car manufacturers buy in are actually Bosch and therefore will probably have something like that.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

If it's optical, maybe I just need a small round white sticker with a diagonal line through it.

Get OBDEleven:

https://obdeleven.com/

It can change any settings and then restore it back using the app on your phone.

I have removed annoying seat belt sound from my car, also removed the lane departure control from the ACC. Lane departure can be useful on motorways, but on country lanes is a pure nightmare.

Also have disabled speed limiter Automatic Cruise Control ACC with the speed signs recognition. It not only limits the speed, but also tries to reach the maximum speed which reads from the signs. Which is dangerous on country roads, sometime you have 50 on a country road that makes actually doing 50 dangerous not to mention unpleasant for my dog and all the passengers.

I want to cruise with 40 there but the sign recognition is not letting me Crying or Very sad

Here is my educational video about it Laughing

New van arrived today. As suspected, it has automatically on, every time you start it:

Lane assist Perfect to steer you into cyclists and oncoming traffic on narrow back roads.

Automatic collision avoidance. Just the thing to get randomly rear-ended through no action of your own or to send you into a skid when it decides to brake when you decided to swerve.

Speed limit nag. Just annoying. Doesn't actually stop you doing it.

Driver alertness warning. I'll let go of the steering wheel if I want to.

Stop/start. Or as I like to call it, Auto-stall.

I sucessfully installed my ADAT defeat device today, complete with snazzy manufacturers logo. It can't back-seat drive if it can't see out of the windscreen. Means I only need to turn off the start/stop and driver alert and if I forget, neither of them are going to take over control of the van from me and do something fuckwitted.

I like lane assist, it allows me to take my hands of the wheel to eat my cheeseburger before the Aircon cools it down too much.

Then again, very few cyclists on my road, very few anything.

That's a good way to stop the emergency braking thing, mines done through the front grille with some sensor, it screams if I get within about half a mile of someone's bumper.

Interesting - to hi-jack a little I need (nay, would very much like) to remove the 56mph limit on my Sprinter Amberlance..

..The official MB software xentry can do this I think but its £££s and some outfits won't chang the limit until I've officially down- plated it sub 3.5 tons even though I reckon its well sub 3.0 anyway.

Anyone aware of an alternative? (going to visit Vals link now)
