THREAD UPDATE!! Laughing

Youtube has run out of stuff that I subscribe to at the mo so I thought I'd give The Motorbike Show a go on ITVX. I started from series 6 which is the earliest on there, and it's not too bad! Henry is a bit peculiar, but he's personable and obviously enthusiastic. He directs the programme too, which is a lot of work and he single handedly brought Allen Millyard to TV so can't be all bad.

Negatives? He insists on calling a GSXR a Jeezee or something like that? That is epically annoying, but hey, he used to be a heroin addict according to Wikipedia, so we can allow for some brain addling I guess.

Henry does his best delivering what we all know to a much wider audience (I hope) and encourages people into motorcycling. Yes, he can grate a bit, don't we all? With the others on his show and how he (like Mike brewer) champions old school and local engineers and workshops, has to be deserved of a bit more kudos.

Was nice to get an update on the Norton Nemesis last night, Milliards YouTube series appears to have come to stop on the subject.

What I liked too is that he pitched the detail well. He talked about forks and shocks and things without explaining what each was (for a wider audience) but he didn't go into frame geometry or cartridges or anything like that. I could personally handle a bit more technical detail, but the majority wouldn't so I think he's done a very good job.

I don't think he's a fantastic rider, or at least the H+S people when filming won't let him ride anything with more than about 80bhp, or lean more than a couple of degrees. But he is undoubtedly watchable and enthusiastic, and I suspect he's more knowledgeable and about as skilled as the average UK motorcyclist.

Pretty sure 'skilled' doesn't apply; if you've seen any episodes of Shed and Buried it's manifestly obvious that he can't even hold a spanner properly. He's OK at wiping things with an oily rag but his mate Sam (?) is the one who appears to actually fix anything.

To be fair he was on a Hayabusa last week (comparing current model vs the Mk 1 of 25 years ago)...

It is probably worth remembering that as well as being director and presenter he is also, to a certain extent, a performer. What you see on screen maybe just part of his “shtick”, such as being incompetent with a spanner. It is supposed to be entertaining, after all. It’s not a lecture from the Open University.

Oddly enough, I prefer Drew Pritchard to Henry Cole*.
The whole "I'm an eccentric likeable fellow with posh-chap hair" schtick gets on my tits, same as the Hairy Bikers do/did.

At least Pritchard with that grouchy-bollocks thing he has going on is a bit more "real".

*But I'm getting used to Cole, I just can't take much more than a small dose of him.

Aaaaarrgh! Nooooooo!!

Cole is a bit of a pillock granted, but what you see is what you get. No bullshit and he's honest about his past mistakes.

The turtle-faced, short-arsed, bull-shitting, smug know-it-all Pritchard on the other hand is nausiating, adulterous prick of the highest order..

Clearly the aggrieved husband didnt hit him hard enough.

I don't know this guy Pritchard at all, but looking at the pics in the linked Mirror article, I'm wondering - do we think the adulterous wife maybe had a 'type'?

Laughing I thought exactly that too.

Shipping oil has different rules because of dangerous goods handling. It seems to make sense.

I finished watching ALL the motorbike show on ITVX and I quite liked it. Henry Cole definitely has a pattern, and he's not a fan of the 'big' powerful bike. Give him a 1950s classic, or a 1970s two stroke tourer and he's well away. Millyard is a great foil for him because of his excessive enthusiasm and Millyard's stoicism but really Millyard wouldn't work on his own without Cole.

His opinions on bikes were generally good IMO, but occasionally he did say some odd things which I assume fit into the slot better than the full low down. He often said things handled great but made no comparison for example, or would say things like "This bike is totally great, but why did they name it what they did?" or something, which is not really a review as such. Even so, it entertained me on this cold Christmas and January period.

The most consistent criticism he seems to have is for bikes with keyless which I think most right thinking motorcyclists would agree on.

I'll watch it if it happens to be on but haven't yet made an effort to catch up.

I think it's ok really, does seem pitched towards middle-aged gits on 'friendly' bikes.

Also put Alan Millyard on the telly in a good way as he is a bit of a one-off genius in a shed type.
I like how he had no qualms about firing up the priceless Nemesis with a can of easystart!

The show isn’t solely targetting bikers so some of the nitty gritty we’d like to hear would go over the heads of most of the audience.

Oh hang on, am I thinking of The Motorbike Show, World’s Greatest Motorcycle Rides, Shed and Buried or Junk and Disorderly?
Very Happy
