I don't think anybody has made a hubless anything work well. Many have tried. They offer theoretical advantages which are alway defeated by friction.

My mates track bike (and by no means a modern one, it's a 1950s Flying Scot) can be sat upside down and the front wheel spun. You can go for a cuppa and it will still be spinning when you get back. It has bamboo rims.
