That said, Still on Win7 now and perfectly happy. I didn't upgrade from XP even until 2018. |
Yikes.
I'd not run an unpatched W10 at the mo, let alone an obsolete OS.
The transition from W10 to 11 is going to cause a massive issue for personal PC users IMO, and I suspect Microsoft may release a method of installing W11 without the TPM just to get more users up to the latest OS. I hope you have a decent external firewall, or just don't go on the internet. |
Nah I don't. I think a lot of that is scaremongering shite. Not had firewall or antivirus since '18 on the win 7 pc (though I do occasionally do a sweep once every 2 or 3 years, and always go online with old OSs from win3>xp no problem. I always turned off XP updates, and Win7 updates. Only ever installed service packs. It's not since before pornhub existed that I've actually got viruses. Part of it is luck sure, but most of it in my part is just not being stupid or naive. ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

The dog is in disgrace for chasing Dennis, my tripod cat.
I nearly pissed myself* in fear that I couldn't get off the sofa quick enough to rescue the cat.
I could see the dog's hackles were up in excitement of the cat appearing to be vulnerable (for once), due to falling on her one-legged side and unable to get back up.
The cat was spitting and hissing (as usual) but scuffling like a turtle on its back trying to re-establish her upright position.
I spent a lot of money on that cat at the vets getting her through a bout of throaty lymphoma and I wasn't about to let the dog rip her throat out while she had the chance.
Luckily we both survived the crisis and the dog has been banished to her bed for the evening, little toe-rag.
*yes, I had been lying on the sofa reading a book and thinking that I really should get up for a wee, when my friend Moira rang and the dog went for Dennis simultaneously.
Moira, who is jumpy at the best of times, was wondering what the fuck was going on, World War 3 at chez hellkat with the cat spitting and me roaring at the fuckin dog
Fucking loony bin and I'm the only person here ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Well, while we're on crazy fucking dogs...
Took my two dogs for their walk today. We're walking down a path through a public park area, minding our own business, both of them on leads, as I've done most days for the past 20-odd years). I become aware of two people standing on the grass about 20 yards to my left, each with a huge German shepherd sitting at their feet, and all four looking over in my direction. I give them the 'fellow-dog-owner' nod of recognition.
Suddenly all hell breaks loose. I hear one of the owners shouting for his dog, and within a split second, his German shepherd is on my little samoyed (she's definitely a lover, not a fighter ), who is now on the ground and howling like a banshee under the attack. I've got a dog lead in either hand and trying to pull my samoyed away (I don't know what my labrador's doing behind me, or indeed, the other German shepherd) while simultaneously trying to land kicks on this wolf before it tears my dog's throat out).
I do manage to get in two satisfactorily solid blows to its ribs (which achieves precisely nothing) before the owner arrives and manages to pull the beast off and tether it. All over in about 10 seconds, but Jesus. Needless to say I lose the plot with the owners - all they've got is "ooh sorry, he's never done that before". Yeah, right. Unbelievable.
(Fortunately my dog was unharmed and seemingly unaffected by the experience.) ____________________ KC100->CB100N->CB250RS--------->DL650AL2->R1200RS->R1250RS |

I'm irrationally annoyed by the new Burger King delivery advert which is set in an operating theater.
They have their surgical gloves under the cuffs of their gowns. The gloves go over the cuff.
I realise this is totally irrational because they're eating burgers in an operating theater but it smacks of poor attention to detail.
I'm pretty sure any other surgeons who see it are equally as uncomfortable with this. Also probably in part because I spent what seemed like an unreasonably long time learning how to put on a pair of latex gloves over a gown without my fingers coming out of the end of the sleeves or anything touching the outside of the glove other than the outside of the other glove. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. On my cycling ommute to work I pass through a park which has a legit cycle path shared with walkers. It shows signs to this effect and warnings that dogs should be under control/ on lead while on the path - after all there's about 10 acres of park land they can use too.
I've narrowly missed coming to blows several times with dog owners shouting 'Mind my dog!' at me as the clueless (usually labrador) meanders back and forth in front of me and across the path off lead. The fracas usually starts when I respond in no uncertain terms about the value of a lead in these events.
PS
Owners with some savvy get a polite 'Thank you' from me if they secure their dog as I pass. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750

Credit card company have just reduced my limit £500.
This is a total pain in the arse, it's less than I spend on it every month and wouldn't cover the deposit on a hire car when i go on holiday. It won't cover my insurance payment due next month so I need to sort it out.
I suppose I'm a bad customer in that I've had the same card for 15 years and have never paid a penny of interest. Full balance is cleared every month by direct debit, I just use it for the added security it gives for online purchases and larger purchases. The only other debt I have is my mortgage which is actually overpaid by more than double every month.
Now I have to spend my half day fucking about on the phone either getting it raised again or cancelling it (it's useless with a £500 limit) and getting a different one. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. Thing is, I use this card quite a lot (it's on my amazon account among other things). I spend over £500 on it most months.
Weird. They clearly don't want me as a customer any more. Fine, I'll go somewhere else. I have no brand loyalty and realistically, none of the various features and attributes of different credit cards make the slightest difference to me.
Wont be a barclaycard though, for one their payments system seem to regularly fuck-up and that's what Mrs stinkwheel has so in the event of being on overseas, it's good to have access to two different payment systems. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. Similar for me - DD each month. Mine is RBS and I think a ludicrous 10k limit. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750

I went on date #2 with some herbert, during which time he mentioned that he had an on-again-off-again relationship with some woman.
I was barely interested as it was.
The only reason I didn't walk out of the pub on him straight away was that I still had half a glass of wine.
I've been on the wrong end of several relationships where - after a considerable amount of time - blokes I've been become reasonably soft on have decided to return to an ex, rather than stick with me ... and I am just no longer up for that shite.
So I let him walk me to the train station and then he decided to shove his tongue in my mouth at the entrance to the train station in public and everything ... and wondered why I texted him to tell him I wasn't interested by the time I got home.
I'm too old for this shit ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Computers in charge of fucking everything, especially where a simple switch would do.
In the van this morning (2024 citroen dispatch), turned off the annoying stop-start function. Screen locked up, radio went off, electronic dash went blank.
Ok, I thought, I'll just cycle the ignition key and it'll probably restart the electonics. Key off. Engine still running. Well that's weird. Key out. STILL running (but steering lock engaged which was an error, got it back in again pretty sharp though).
So key off and out had no effect, vehicle was still running and powered up.
Stopped at work, key out and it was still running. Put in in neutral and the start-stop which hadn't turned off killed the engine. Walked away from it, locked the doors and went inside for 10 minutes. Came back out and the locked up centre screen was still on, still no dash.
Locked it up again and left it for an hour. Came back out and it all turned on again as normal but was displaying a battery charge warning. Presumably it didn't power itself down until the battery panic system kicked in.
All fine now but fuck me. How can you market a vehicle that can have an electronic glitch that leaves the engine running with the fucking key out? Clearly the key switch isn't actually a switch, it's a suggestion input.
Checked on the way home tonight and key off does kill the engine now. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
