WTF. Shocked

Baby car seats can't be reused, by law. No recycling, no charity shops will touch them - they're figuratively toxic. Too big to fix in most household bins they should be taken to your local refuse tip or punted out illicitly on Facebook Marketplace but ppl are lazy.

Curious, does that apply to being used for a different child within the same household?

I'm sure 'by law' only refers to retail (which would include charity shops). I'm certain there's nothing to stop people selling them privately - FB, Gumtree etc; and certainly no reason not to use them within a family.

Selling a second hand helmet is not illegal though, I've seen loads of used helmets on ebay/gumtree. Not recommended maybe but not illegal.

I'll have to walk back my earlier comment on *laws* regarding car seats but it still is the case that no charity shop or bric-a-brac store will touch them. I'm pretty sure eBay and Facebook Marketplace have automated filters for prospective listings as well.

I suppose you shouldn't take risks with the kiddies but bear in mind the majority of child seat failures in accidents are down to incorrect fitting rather than disintegrating due to old age.

I must admit, the degree of po-faced self riteousness that gets displayed about child car seats gets right up my nose.

Yes, i agree they are a good idea but from the reaction of some people, you'd think someone had been chaining their kid up in the basement and battering them with a stick if they are caught not using one (or heaven forfend, a second hand one).

When I was a kid, we had a vinyl bench seat in the back with no belts at all. You'd slide from one side of the car to the other if it went round a sharp corner. When I was even smaller, I had a cushion to sit on so I could see out of the window to help prevent car-sickness. When I was smaller than that. I was in a moses basket on the floor behind the passenger seat. It's a miracle I somehow survived this horriffic abuse from my uncaring parents.

I don't think we've ever paid "new" money for any car seat and somehow the grandkids have not been deaded. Miracle!

On counting neurons... "Herculano-Houzel (2012) came up with a better method that involves liquidising the brain (again, post-mortem)"

We really have achieved "Idiocracy" if post-mortem needs to be explicitly stated Laughing

This is called survivorship bias and is well known to be a negative influence on the overall view of the data. The reason we have the rules we do is exactly because of the children who did die as a result of not having proper restraint in vehicles.

So yeah, people are probably a *bit* over the top, but as motorcyclists we have to look at it as we would with a crash helmet. Car seats have EPS liners just like crash helmets do, and one that's been involved in an accident will be compromised in the same way a crash helmet is. The EPS liner will be compromised by the same environmental and chemical issues as a helmet, and will also be subject to the same time constraints as a helmet.

The reason people are more over the top about car seats than helmets, is that a motorcyclist can consent to the risk involved, whereas a baby can't I guess?

Maybe I should start being a self-riteous prick about people taking children in cars at all. Over 2000 children were killed of seriously injured in car crashes in 2021. Why do these uncaring, irresponsible parents take their children in the car at all?

It'll make a change from me being a self-riteous prick (in response to them being self-riteous pricks about motorcycle helmets) about people not having a 5-point harness in their car when it would make them so much safer in a collision.

Everyone should take the bus.

Only if you can get a seat, standing and falling over is detrimental to your health. Wink

Plus the law changed about 10 years ago re 15kg vs 22kg weight. Personally I am counting down the days I can get the one child into the backless booster as soon as she hits 3.5stone.

These days child seats are also a fashion statement, just like SUV's and yummy mummies with their gallon bottles of strawberry water. Just like helmets (which I have bought 2nd hand and been given and use for many years- dropped by accident, dropped on purpose) I buy the car seats cheap. I think the halfords one was £35 (backed) and the backless simple booster seat was £10 in Asda.

Funny the topic should come up, because I have for some time been considering buying the older 15kg car seats 2nd hand (as the law is not retroactive) just to get over the faff of feeding the seatbelt through the backed seat every single time I swap it between cars (which I do a lot).

Got the "summer" bikes out of the shed today*. They all fired up with a minimum of fiddling. Even the 612 bullet which it turns out, I'd left the fuel on all winter. Mikuni needle valves seem pretty effective.

I rode them from the shed to the garage with no helmet on.

I'll get them up on the ramp tomorrow for a check over. The Enfield and VFR need an MOT and I want to fit a new rocker cover to the Enfield which now has a (hopefully) less leaky breather fitted to it. The fact the old breather is leaking suggests it wasn't a waste of time fitting one.

* My 612 bullet, my VFR750 and Mrs stinkwheels CBR600. I decided they could do without getting covered in salt. Had all the bikes running today, which I'm sure made me popular with the neighbours.

Yes, a whole 100 yards of dirt track. It's a wonder I didn't die. The trials bike had a flat tyre too (flatter than usual, as in totally flat, not just mostly flat).

ASDA delivering my grub this morning, biker standing next to his bike in front of my house ... jokingly tell him he can't park there, he says he's just about to go ... I then let him know that I was joking and that I'm also a biker.

Best bit ... he'd just passed his test a few minutes earlier and was on his way back to the place where he started from ... fantastic Thumbs Up

I was about to write that (unusually) nothing has brought me joy today, but then I just remembered that on several occasions today I have had the benefit of walking up or down Dovehouse Street in Chelsea which is delightfully full of cherry trees with drifting white blossom.

Wub

... which brightened my foul mood considerably.

I have acquired a nice little Clarke MIG Welder.
The amount of people that needed something either repaired or made during the time I was able to do it at work was quite surprising.
Now my place has closed, I'm still able to either help people out or start on my own projects.

I do like a bit of electric glue. Wub

I do too!!!

I'm a stick welder fan. I did numerous courses when I was in the MN but the ones that I learnt most from were stick welding. I'm not coded welder class but close, or at least I was. I've probably lost a lot of the skill now, practice is perfect.

I finally did something other than just sitting mindlessly in front of the computer all day ... mind you, it's taken me a few days (shit health) ...

Sprayed sodium hypochlorite (15% strength) over all the manky buff coloured paving slabs at my garage and path at front of house.

Went over said paving slabs with the pressure washer with the jet nozzle (oh I likey) and brought them back to almost new looking, while also removing all of the moss which had grown between the small amount of monoblock.

Removed a barrow full of grass/weeds/earth from my front garden wall where it meets the pavement, so much better looking.

Small steps, but made me happy and the place looks like a slightly tidied up dump now Laughing

Moved half a bulk bag of building sand from front garden to back garden, just about to do the other half.

Got an extra two bags of frozen diced chicken in my ASDA delivery, someone can't tell the difference between 3 and 5!

An email from Three informing me of that a refer a friend payment was waiting for me (should get it in a few days) ... so after telling them to feck off due to their complete and utter incompetence, paying nothing to them in the process, they now want to give me £40 Very Happy
