Some of it was enlightening. Hardly anyone knew how to define a dual carriageway or which speed limits applied to what roads Sad (Apart from me, engage smug mode.) There were some sections of pure propaganda which would have caused an Applied Mathematician an aneurism and some "touchy feely" how would you feel shite. I managed to keep quiet and stick to politically expedient rather than correct answers. Jump through the hoops, get it over with.

In my action plan I suggested I might get a "THINK 20 MPH" sticker to put on the bike somewhere. I may actually do that and slap one on the Old Fella's Harley when he's not looking Laughing

"THINK 20mph - Harleys, just try your best"

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

well, got my '24 in a 20' letter back from Reichsfuhrer Khans money sharks at the met and they have offered me a course. I would have been pretty miffed if they hadn't TBH but there we go.

I shall book it in the next few days and I shall still have a clean license. 2 speed courses in the last 4 years but nil points. That's a win, as much as getting done for 24 mph can be.

Try and think of some poltically acceptable answers to the following questions:

Why are you on the speed awareness course? (i.e. not 'cos the government are money grabbing cunts, try "I evidently need to brush up on my road skills")

How would you feel if you ran over and killed a child? As is the typical stupid journalist "how do you feel?" shite.

How are you going to do better in the future? "I'm going to make a nice cup of tea and read the Highway Code again." would probably get a chuckle and be an acceptable answer.

DO NOT go on a rant. If you feel yourself getting angry, stay silent. If you're put on the spot try and say something neutral and non-committal. Keep all answers short and to the point and don't draw the whole thing out.

Have a pen and paper ready or print out the worksheet if they email you one.

Yep, I went on one run by a local driving school in October and it was friendly and non-accusatory, just a reminder of the rules really. You’d have to be a fool to get there and kick off. All I took from it was that the assigned speed limit can sometimes be hard to divine compared to the old days and you need to look for the road signs. I’m still of the opinion that 20mph is stupid, >70mph on a dual carriageway isn’t unreasonable and it’s inattentiveness that they should be focussed on. The course didn’t change the way I drive/ride.

Was that a physical course? I thought they were all on line now but according to the letter I got I can actually attend a course if I want. (I'm certainly not going to, just curious).

Yes, it was at the local golf club. I could have attended an online session but I thought I’d go and brazen it out. I’d heard there would be biscuits. It wasn’t true.

Thought I'd better download zoom onto my laptop and test it as I have the course on the 1st May. Downloaded ok, picture working, mic working but no sound. So tested all the obvious, volume, mute, settings etc. Nothing. Google had a few ideas but that didn't work. Evil or Very Mad

So got my old laptop out and downloaded onto that, everything worked fine except it was slow and juddery (due to old age like me).

So went back to my in use laptop and the only thing that is different is I have a USB hub plugged into it. So unplugged that and hey presto, it worked. Sound. I do not understand why as I had a card reader, a cooling fan and my wireless mouse plugged into the hub, no speakers or anything.

Anyway, after playing about it seems the cooling fan is the culprit, unplug that and everything works fine - Bizarre.

Anyway, now I will be able to hear what is being said instead of trying to lip read. Fcuking technology. Laughing

It was interesting to see my fellow law breakers, they were all around my age, late middle age (ahem!). Maybe youths don’t drive anymore or they obey the rules (like Punk never happened ☹️), or they chose the on-line option (likely).

I thought the slide images of roads accompanied by the question, “What’s the speed limit?” just highlighted how difficult it is to judge these days, and they did say you need to look out for the road signs. Fair enough I suppose, but didn't speed limits used to be based on what the majority of drivers thought was acceptable?

I was flashed at 86 (in the car) on the widest part of the M25 at 1am (meh!) but I’ve seen doddery old farts doing 20mph in town who were more dangerous due to a lack of awareness, ignoring pedestrians waiting at zebra crossings, etc. I’m barely conscious in a 20 mph limit due to the lack of stimulation, so I ignore it unless there’s a clear need to be cautious (or there are cameras).

Speed undeniably makes an accident worse but a wise man…, no wait, it was Jeremy Clarkson, once said the best way to survive an accident is not to have one in the first place. I’d prosecute the inattentive drivers first but there’s no camera for that.

The whole speeding thing for when they prosecute you is weird because they use that 10% over or whatever it is. So at the NSL you can go 77 and still not be done. Obviously lorries at 56 on the limiter get away with a 50 cause on the on the motorway/dual carriage way they sit on the limiter all the time. Now with 20 limits, you go 23, very easily done, and you are toast.

Your 86 is 22% over the 70. In a 20 zone 22% over is 24 which is what I got done for. Now I've consciously driven keeping my speed below 80 many times, I doubt I could keep my speed down at 23 in a 20 easily if you get my meaning.

The National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) guidance supposedly does recommend giving drivers a '10% plus 2' leeway but that is of course only guidance so you could be done for 71mph on the motorway.

Do you have problems maintaining a constant speed ? What happens is you're doing about 20mph which becomes 23mph, then 25mph, it's only a slight increase to 29mph, back to 22mph, down to 19, and so on and so on?

I hadn’t thought of it like that. It might have been 83 but yes I think you’re right. Maybe there is actually an element of discretion in offering a course. Good record, it was the small hours of Sunday night/Monday morning, at least 4-lanes on the motorway and almost no other vehicles around.

Justice is nowadays more about the letter than the spirit of the law. Do they put speed cameras outside schools or do they mostly put them in places that will make a lot of money?

If they want to make money, just send a parking warden round by our local school at kicking out time. Loads of cars parked on double yellows every day. I've moaned to both the police and council as it's a bloody nightmare navigating between them with multitude of obnoxious kids running in and out of parked cars, do they care, do they fcuk. Well, until one gets splattered then they will. Rolling Eyes

So course done today. The 'teacher' was a girl who looked about 12. I wouldn't have thought she was old enough to drive. Of the 10 ( I think it was 10) at least half were sheepshaggers who were caught out in the 20mph speed areas. 20mph might save lives but it will certainly generate revenue.

Did it teach me anything new? The odd relevant statistic but nothing earth shattering but it's 2+ hours I'll never get back. Is it worth it for a clean license, yes. Will it change the way I drive? Doubt it but I know if i get caught any time in the next 3 years it's points so that's more likely to reign me in.
