Here there have been two instances of phone lines being struck by lightning, back in dial up days it blew up our cordless phone and the modem in PC - there was burning smell and soot up the back of it.
Then something similar happened to first router but there was no soot. It just went pop and ceased to function |

Yup, back in Cornwall with overhead telephone lines, my parents' router popped in a lightning storm. You can get surge protectors with isolated phone sockets, also ones for ethernet if you have some long run going outdoors.
As to surge protectors for mains, most consumer units have RCD protect these days which usually trip if something weird is going on. I'd say largely redundant, YMMV of course. A decent UPS would probably be more useful as it can cover surges, spikes, low voltage (brown outs) and full blackouts for a time.
Middle of nowhere and the heart of cities are the worst places for power problems. For the former, only having a handful of customers disincentivises infrastructure upgrades. For the latter, the opposite! Fiddle with one power or phone cable and it's potentially thousands of people affected so stuff only gets fixed on an as-needed basis. ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

First Gigabyte Aorus Z790 Pro X motherboard from Overclockers had one bent pin, I'm absolutely certain I didn't do it, but luckily they've refunded me without issue as they didn't have another in stock.
New one ordered from Amazon and will arrive tomorrow ... so put the new system all back together along with the new (to me) RTX 3080 and I'll be good to go (hopefully) |
