My 118k, 2010 VW is showing a P0016 error code,

Crankshaft Position Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)

It drove home fine although I’d noticed it was a bit rattly on start-up lately. I assume it’s a cam chain problem (it’s overdue) so it’s off the road. Unfortunately my local garage is closing down because the landlord is selling up to developers.

Anyhow, I was wondering why timing chain replacement isn’t a scheduled service item like it is on cars. Is it simply because most bikes don’t reach high mileage?

You can masure them. There will be a tolerance for a certain number of links in the workshop manual.

None of my bikes have a cam chain (Enfield 350, Enfield 612, Minsk 125 and VRF7500).

I measured the cam chain on my zx6r at 43K miles when I had to remove the cams to re-shim some valves.
Was approx 30% worn according to workshop manual.
I guess the chain must outlive the rest of the bike in pretty much most cases.

Most bikes crash before they reach 100,000 miles. Sad fact but pretty much true.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
