My view is that small plates just draw too much attention. Not unlike personalised plates, 3D plates etc. IMO you just need a boring reg number on a normal plain plate. That way you are more likely to get away with some judicious ‘making progress’ in 50mph and NSL speed limits.

That said, quarter of an inch all round probably wouldn’t be noticeable. A microscopic single line plate right under the subframe in front of the rear wheel is probably just taking the piss.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

No idea what the climate is currently like, as we all know, the plod have their fads just like everyone else. Given how much they rely on ANPR these days I don't see them going easy.

Having said that, I stopped risking it around 2011. It used to be a running joke with my then MOT place in the 80s/90s, I had a legal plate stashed there - could turn up, swap the plate and be out of the door with the paperwork in under 5 minutes. Then it all changed and they dropped the HORT1. I got two stops inside 3 months (in different parts of the country so not even a local with an axe to grind) and the DVLA sent a warning letter. If I had been done for non compliance again it would have resulted in my plate being de-registered.
