So "upgrading" (really?) to broadband only. They are all insistant I get a fibre broadband deal.

Ok, also fine, that would be great. However, there isn't a fibre optic cable within at least half a mile of my house, it stops at the BT box on the outskirts of town. The last half mile is copper and my phone line is still overhead copper on on a pole.

Now every company I checked (including my current provider) is insistant fibre to premesis is available for my address and none of them even so much as offer part fibre for my postcode.

I'm pretty sure they aren't going to dig up the three roads it would have to cross and put in half a mile of fibre optic cable to run fibre broadband into my house during their installation appointment in 3 weeks.

I suspect the best case is this installation will consist of them fitting a new master socket with the phoneline pair disconnected and telling me I now have fibre broadband (I already have part fibre). But charging me as if it's fibre to the premesis anyway.

I can see this turning into a debacle which results in me having no internet connection at all and it somehow being made out to be my fault that they said they could hook me up to a non-existant fibre optic cable.


What about Starlink or 4/5G router?

I have 4G on the boat. I have to say it drives me mad with its poor performance at times. Yes, I'm on a canal boat, yes, sometimes not in a town but FFS, this is a tiny island. I couldn't live with 4g as my main internet.

Laughing 5G. I get intermittant and low strength 4G mobile which is super patchy, different carrier depending on if I'm up or down stairs (I have a roaming mobile). The chances of sucessfully completing phone call have around halves since they turned off 3G.

I already have a 4G router so it's an option if I land up disconnected but when I trialled it for internet, the signal strength was really intermittant and the speed with it. I'm currently using that with a REALLY cheap (£4.50pcm) PAYG calls only SIM as a "house phone" connected to my DECT phones because I can leave the router in a place I get a signal. Otherwise I have to stand in one place to make and receive mobile phone calls. But yes, throwing a broaband SIM in that will get me a connection of sorts, but not one I can watch a film over.

I suppose startlink is an option.

The plot thickens. I got notification through the door yesterday that fibrus are closing the road through town in three weeks time to install a row of new telegraph poles. I feel this revelation is relevant to my suspicion that the BT engineer coming on Monday will not in-fact be installing full fibre broadband to my house.
