PostPosted: 21:09 - 28 Apr 2005    Post subject: Removing spray paint....Help needed!!! Reply with quote

I was out in my garden spraying my cars alloy wheels with tetrosyl wheel paint this morning, ( thet turned out great too) but I had to come inside to answer my phone, while I was inside one of my kids, (none of them will admit it) got the paint and srayed it on my micron can.
How the hell do I get it off???
I didn't notice until 10 mins ago and it is dry.

HELP

Aw, crap! Sell the children and use the money to buy a new system? Wink (I'm sure someone will give you a proper answer).

Can you use paint stripper on cans /pipes?

EDIT: Don't use paint stripper 'cause that'll f*ck up the finish on the can. Well brake fluid does. Embarassed )

Hi,

Petrol might work, but I do know what it might do to the can,

How about T-CUT or metal polish ?

- and send them all to bed without any tea, and then spend all weekend polishing the car and bike. Very Happy

Regards

C

I'd also recommend t-cut, then when the paint is mostly off get a low abrasion polish to finnish it off.

What material is the can? gotta recommend autochrome as a metal polish if it is any sort of shiny finish.

White spirit and a cloth? Just keep rubbing with a soaked cloth. I don't know what it'll do to the finish, but I can't see it would be anything bad if it's shiney :- chromed?

I'll try white spirts, but i won't chance wire wool.
I'll maybe try petrol too, (I can test underneath the can first)
Keep the suggestions coming, I'm running out of options.

if its all on 1 blob you could try a very thin blade like a razor and slice it off, failing that a power washer, those things can cut into concrete so should strip anything though i would take the can off the bike first.

With your Micron can there is no paint on it originally? and, if so, try using brake fluid because that eats right through paint if left long enough and leaves you with a metal surface again !

You could try an OLD 3M green scouring pad, use an old one so it won’t be too abrasive. The can sounds like its coated in high temperature lacquer which could be redone from a can if need be.

STOP!!

If the paint came out of a rattle can then Laquer Thinner will take it straight off, even if it's dry. Just soak a rag with it & lay it on the paint for a few second & then just wipe it off.
In fact laquer thinner will remove most paint unless it's isocyanate base

try Cellulose thinners...

if it's a metal can, you're laughung.. I'm not sure about the resins used on CF cans tho.. I DOUBT they use cellulose solluable resins, as may of them use Polyester based resin.. but i'm not sure...

(also depends if it's "proper" CF which has been cured in an autoclave at pressure to produce a wonderful, light, and strong (in a tensile way) material, or if it's glorified fibre reinforced plastic)

or Xylene based (i THINK that includes the hammer/smoothrites of the world)
