I keep having intermittent loss of power in the first gear at times for the last two days. I think its since i played with the connector from the plug to the ignition.

A loose contact here should be the reason right? I just dont wanna be stuck somewere without knowing where to check.

Umm.. I suppose if it was that you would have problems in all gears?

Run back throuh everything you have done with the bike untill you find a problem. If not have a mechanic look at it..
