Hi everyone i have got a prolem with a 87 gpz500s. The bike starts fine all electrics seem to be working fine revs ok so then i go to put it into gear neutral light goes off but as let out the clutch it just dies.........

Its not like its not getting enough fuel or air because i can rev the bike all the way in neutral no problem but its like what happens when you have the side stand down and try to start off it just kills the engine but the sidestand is up. I have checked the switch and it seems fine and im getting continuity thru the switch box yet it still dies like when you have the side stand down....

Has anyone had any experience with this because i am at the end of my wick been looking for the problem all day read the haynes manual and it gave me nothing useful any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

stewart

Most likely your sidestand switch.. you may have to cut the wires, and try a by-pass. Even if it looks like the switch works, the contacts may be dodgey.

Is there a switch on the clutch lever as well?

Yes, the GPZ500s has a clutch lever switch, although it is wired to the starter motor not the engine itself, so doubt its the cause of the problem.

Check all connections, in particular the earth. 9/10 it's a corroded earth connection in all things electrical!! Undo and clean all connections with a bit of fine glass paper. Also spray some wd40 around and INTO the switch to clean it out.

If it was just the sidestand switch, I would have thought it would have cut out immediatley when you select the gear. I'm not sure how the idiot switches work on my GPZ because I disabled them years ago. It would certainly be worth checking (bypassing?) both the sidestand and clutch microswitches though.

I had reason to dismantle the relay/fuse box on a GPZ a short while ago and it is a mass of microrelays on a printed circuit board (I was astounded that you could actually take it apart in the first place, unusual for a black box), I really couldn't get my head around it, a mess of logic. You could try giving the fuse box a sharp thump with the heel of your hand in case one of the relays is sticking, that fixed my one Wink

I had the same problem as the original poster, on my GPZ500s, i.e. it died when I let the clutch out rather than when I put it into gear, and it WAS the sidestand switch - everything was fine after I'd removed it and bypassed it.
