I've never really bothered with plug gaps and my plugs have always been fine.
Make sure you screw them in quite tight though, especially if they are new as they have a washer on them that needs to be squashed down to make a good seal with the cylinder head.
I forgot to tighten up the sparkplug on my nsr125 a few months back, I had just pinched it up gently and not cranked it right up for some reason which escapes me now. I rode it for a few miles, probably about 30 or so before the bike started to sound a bit odd. It seemed down on power and I only really noticed it when I was going up a really steep, winding mountain road. I got to the top and stopped the bike to check it over. When I looked at the spark plug it was hanging onto the engine by its last 1 or 2 threads! The bike was still running like this! Bloody ridiculous, but that's a honda for you. ____________________ Current bike: VTR1000F Firestorm. Previous: Firestorm (written off) - XJ600 Divvy - NSR125 - DT125 and a load of offroaders. |

You'll probably be ok with the gap, 4-strokes and CDI ignitions are not so fussy, you would have to get it right with a points ignition 2-stroke though. They are usually set to 20 thou" from the box which is generally about right (well any NGK plug I have used has been).
Assuming they are brand new plugs with compression washers, I usually put them in finger tight then tighten them another 90 degrees using a plug spanner. This makes the compression washer squash down by the right amount and is a more accurate way of tightening threads than a torque wrench (a 90 degree turn tightens the plug down the threads by a fixed distance regardless of any muck in the thread, how oily they are etc.) . In any case, a 1/4 turn off finger tight shouldn't strip anything that wasn't already broken.
Glad to hear you are making progress. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
